Poor references
[edit]I'm concerned about the quality of sources in this article. I spot-checked the first three.
- The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics is behind a paywall. That's not a deal-breaker, but it does make it inconvenient to verify things. In this case, I wanted to verify the lede sentence, Such a system would drain purchasing power from booming economies, preventing overheating while bolstering economies which experience a recession, which seems like a rather WP:POV thing to leave unverified.
- Next was the statement, Thus, an "equivalent" European unemployment insurance can also be seen as a reinsurance for national unemployment systems. That's sourced to a 32-page document, with no indication where in the document I should look. Searching the document for "reinsurance" failed to turn up anything useful.
- I also looked at, The authors of the Marjolin Report state:[3] "...the means of redressing imbalances between Community countries should be considerably reinforced…. The introduction of a community system of unemployment benefit would constitute an effective approach." That report is a 140 page document, and again there's no indication of where in the report I should be looking. Searching the PDF for various snippets from that quote failed to find anything relevant. That may be because of the inherent problems with searching PDFs (the original text is often garbled), but in any case, it renders the citation impossible to verify.
I haven't checked anything further, but based on what I've seen, this fails WP:V. -- RoySmith (talk) 23:44, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
- BerlinEconomist, do you have any comments on the sources? — Newslinger talk 22:47, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
RoySmith and Newslinger: I added a page number for the quote in the Marjolin report. I also moved one reference to a point where it better fits and added a new reference on the question of "equivalent systems"/"re-insurance". If it is of any help, I could also try to provide you privately with a copy of the New Palgrave's entry. (My apologies for not meeting the standards yet - this is my first complete Wikipedia entry) - BerlinEconomist (talk) 13:31, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I'm not seeing it. I looked for bits and pieces of ...the means of redressing imbalances between Community countries should be considerably reinforced…. The introduction of a community system of unemployment benefit would constitute an effective approach. I looked on both page 34 of the PDF (marked 27 in the original), and page 41 of the PDF (marked 34 on the original). I can't find it on either page. Are you sure you cited the right page? Perhaps you could give me a more specific location? -- RoySmith (talk) 13:47, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
- I see it on page 41 of the PDF (marked as page 34 on the original). It's in the second paragraph on the page. — Newslinger talk 13:54, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
- Ah, yup, got it now. Thanks. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:15, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
