Anna Adams, "Secret Agent" link revertion and replacement

On the whole, while I see that some estate agents in the UK might not like to see this here, I do not believe that it is in violation of wiki policy and it is not an advertsing link. It does support a statement made in the article and offers a broader perspective on the industry.

• More than that, it is a reference. Everything in Wikipedia is supposed to be supported by references, and this article certainly needs more to meet Wikipedia standards. References are how people can check that the article is right: nobody should simply accept what an article says, because of course anyone could write anything. Removing references is quite wrong except in three cases: where the reference doesn't support the text, where a better reference applies, or where the entire referenced passage is removed. (The quality of references is an issue, because of course, people can type anything on their own site; see Wikipedia:Attribution for what counts. For this reason, the countless "10 things you need to know about estate agents" self-published sites aren't good references. The BBC news web site is pretty high status as references go. Suggestion for a link & an apology

I would like to put forward a link to an advice site in the UK called www.theadvisory.co.uk. I am the editor & I apologise for prematurely placing a link on the 14th.

I do feel that this is an important & relevant link as the site is one of the only places to provide information on using estate agents that isn't written by estate agents.

In the UK the industry has a terrible reputation (many would say it's a reputation that is well deserved) and the public benefit greatly from the impartial advice the site contains.

I would invite you to look at my credentials on the "about" page if you are in any doubt as to whether I am qualified to provide advice on the subject of selling UK property.

I would be interest to get your feedback on this matter & once again apologise for my initial approach.

Inclusion of purely commerical links in this article

In many of the US real estate articles, the general consensus is that purely commercial links to firms offering real estate services are not appropriate for these articles.

The same should apply to this article. I have removed the latest link. Any discussion on this issue should take place here before anything else is added.

Merge with Real estate broker

I think this article should be merged with real estate broker. They are essentially the same thing; it's the person you go to when you want to sell your house and buy a new one, it's just a different name used in different locations. Yes the specific roles are slightly different, but only because laws and conventions are different in the places where the name is different. IT'S THE SAME JOB.

Also, please don't delete the merge template without allowing time for due discussion.

I DISAGREE.

This article relates to a specfic BRITISH approach to selling property. In the US, brokers (and their agents) are licenced under individual state laws and have a variety of fiduciary relationships with their clients (see various agency relationships as explained in the article).

I do not believe that there is any kind of licencing in the UK and that the role played by the "estate agent" is very different (and they are paid differently too.)

There is too much in THIS article which relates to the UK only, and too much in the REAL ESTATE BROKER article which relates to US practise.

PS: fyi - I'm British and have owned propery in the UK and now in the US for 35 years. I was a Realtor for 20 years in Maryland. Vivaverdi 14:36, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

This should not be merged as there should be a clear seperation between property and real estate. The term real estate is not used in the UK where the term Estate Agent is the only term used for Realtors.

Oppose. Terminology and standards of practice are substantively different that I believe a merge would negatively compromise the article. And from a Canadian perspective, where we're heavily influenced by British roots and our southern neighbours, I'm in favour of keeping these articles separate. -- Robocoder (t|c) 18:27, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

I've removed this link because it is really a commerical site, and adds nothing to explaining what an estate agent does.

Estate Agent Speak

Shouldn't there be a section (or at least a mention) about Estate Agent Speak, where estate agents are, shall we say, creative with the truth? It seems to be a fairly fundamental (affectionately) well known trait of the profession. Sionk (talk) 23:17, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
