The continuous use of he/him pronouns for Dongfang Bubai in this article seems inappropriate, as the character often portrayed as a transgender woman in movie and TV adaptations, and also clearly does not conform to traditional gender norms within the source material. 2003:EC:D715:993E:D9A0:845:8957:3683 (talk) 22:13, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Jin Yong addressed this in the novel’s Afterword. Dongfang Bubai is an eunuch in the source material. “Eunuchs have existed for thousands of years in the courts of Egypt and China. They lacked male sexual characteristics but did not necessarily adopting feminine traits.” The stereotypical portrayal in film and TV adaptations are a creative choice by the respective production team.
