34 total is for both events

[edit]

Just to let you know the 34 total is suppose to be for both the individual and synchronized events. While nations tend to send athletes to compete in both events some do not (or are unable since they only qualified 1 individual athlete) which means some of the "additional" divers may not be qualified. To clarify the reason, I have a question. What happens to the spots when a diver has qualified in both individual and synchronized diving? For example, Tom Daley teamed up with his partner in the synchronized platform and then secured a berth on Team GB. The following day, he competed in the individual platform and eventually finished in the top 12 that automatically added him a spot for the Team GB. The sum of the athletes competing in the individual and synchro event of the same height must equal to 34. If Tom Daley competes in both the 10m platform and synchronized 10m platform he would be counted as one athlete. Technically in a worst case scenario where all synchro teams pick different athletes than the ones competing in the individual events some athletes ranked in the top 18 would miss out too (in fact only two athletes would be chosen in the men's 10m platform in this example), but looking back at previous Olympics that would be highly unlikely. On the other side the best case scenario in the men's 3m springboard would be 33 individual athletes because Brazil only qualified one athlete and must use one to make its synchronized team. It's not actually 34 total per event rule but rather 68 total per gender rule. There could be more than 34 per event if an athlete competes on both springboard and platform. In London 2012, for example, there were 35 athletes in total in women's springboard events (individual+synchro). Qwe144 (talk) 22:47, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You are correct about that. Regardless it is probably best to keep the additional athletes blanked until FINA has released some kind of list. JoshMartini007 (talk) 23:34, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Selected Divers

[edit]

Is it worth having an extra column in each event for selected divers as and when their NOCs announce their teams? (I note that the Mexican team, for instance, has already been announced, but that isn't reflected on this page as it would be in other sports) E1tiger (talk) 11:51, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
