Sourcing issues
[edit]I have several concerns over how several of the sources are cited in this article. Foremost is that at least 2 have much later dates attributed to them than their original publication dates. They may be the dates of a reprint, but clearly the dates are so late as to be implausible. This is important because providing only the date of what appears to be a reprint can be misleading to readers who are not very familiar with the secondary literature. BTW, at least one of these authors also has an article in Wikipedia.
The items I am concerned with include:
- Ronald Syme, Tacitus. Originally published in 1958. This is of especial importance since Syme died in 1989. A 1997 publication would likely be little more than a reprinting.
- Werner Eck, Werner, "Jahres- und Provinzialfasten der senatorischen Statthalter von 69/70 bis 138/139". The journal is usually just referred to as Chiron, & not the longer name. Some journals need their longer name to be set forth to avoid ambiguity. This journal also has an article about it.
- E. Mary Smallwood, Principates of Nerva, Trajan and Hadrian. Originally published in 1966. A 2010 would be little more than a reprinting. BTW, Smallwood also has an article about her which needs to improved from a stub. (Since she published much of her work in the 1950s & 1960s, I suspect she may have passed on.)
One further issue: An inscription is quoted in an English translation, but the source cited does not provide either this translation or the Latin original. (Although it is an otherwise valuable reference!) It would be far better if its identifier in Année épigraphique is provided, for that would provide a link to the online database Epigraphik-Datenbank Clauss/Slaby EDCS & allow interested readers to examine this source further. (To fix it myself would require a search on Scaurianus' name in the EDCS database, which is not always a simple task.) -- llywrch (talk) 23:51, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
Proconsul or commender of the province of Mesopotamia?
[edit]The inscription on the tomb of Tiberius Claudius Maximus wrote "the consular commander Terentius Scaurianus, of the army of the Provincia Mesopotamia Nova." Anybody knows if this is the same person as this article? Lerong Lin (talk) 23:32, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
