Number
[edit]There are multiple issues with him having the number 1. For starters, this rule in the NFL rulebook that prohibits a running back from having the number 1. Second, webmasters that make the rosters on team webpages rarely know a players actual number at this time of the year. Third, the webmaster probably saw this picture of him and assumed that was his number, despite it being well documented he wants 6 which is already taken and being against NFL rules. What more than likely happened, while they figure this issue out, they handed him a #1 jersey and said "This will be your number while we figure this out". I have been reverted for using an "official" team roster as a source by administrators before, so obviously the admins in charge of NFL Project don't like them being used as sources. The last issue with the roster of their roster and I have provided a separate source proving the unverifiability of the roster and that proves the number is not permanent.--Rockchalk717 02:14, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- Problem is that we have the most reliable source possible: the roster. I know of nothing that says we cannot use it. While I understand your logic, it's WP:OR and beyond WP:CALC to remove the jersey number. We have and RS and should keep it until it changes. Again, we report on what others say, not what is true. You cannot try to guess what webmasters were thinking. We can ask Wikipedia:WikiProject_Biography/Sports_and_games to weigh in. EvergreenFir (talk) 02:20, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

- The proper place to go for help would actually be WP:NFL since they handle all NFL articles. With that being said, the point I am making is as far as numbers are concerned, rosters on team websites are not reliable. There's been many occasions were I've seen a player be given a number on the roster, then it turns out to not be the number. Being a diehard Chiefs fan, I watch the Chiefs website like a hawk and I have noticed these changes frequently. I think the best course of action, being that in the PDF version of the actual NFL rulebook handed to refs prohibiting him from wearing 1 as a runningback, leave the number blank. I will mention this discussion on the project talkpage.--Rockchalk717 02:33, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you. I'll defer to a third opinion on this. NFL is best place. EvergreenFir (talk) 02:56, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

- Alright, so I ran across this discussion at WT:NFL, and I'll try to offer some insight. As a Bears fan, I usually see the Bears' roster on their website usually being behind most sources, so I wouldn't usually trust team sites with numbers. Meanwhile, for numbers outside the usual position, players are allowed numbers outside of their usual positions due to the size of the rosters, and new numbers are issued before the regular season begins. An example would be linebacker Bryan Cox wearing #0 in the preseason, but switching to #51 in the regular season. ZappaOKCMati 22:00, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
- @ZappaOMati: Thanks for commenting! So what do you think? Keep the 1 for now, or remove it and wait? EvergreenFir (talk) 04:39, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- @EvergreenFir: As I had said, rosters on team sites can be VERY slow to update, so for up-to-date info, we'd usually look at other sources that are recent, and if the picture of Thomas at rookie mini-camp wearing the number is recent, then we can assume it's his number for now, and possibly until the Chiefs release some players with numbers 21-49. So for now, I believe it's fine to keep it in. ZappaOKCMati 14:09, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
