Art choices
[edit]This page currently has three scans of Dawnstar's appearances:
- In a Legion character-description feature in Legion of Super-Heroes (v3) 17, 1985, art by Greg LaRocque and Larry Mahlstedt.
- On the newly created cover of the reissued hardback edition of Crisis on Infinite Earths, 2000, art by George Pérez and Alex Ross.
- In her recent (published May 2007) return to DC Comics continuity in Justice League of America (v2) 9, art by Ed Benes.
In a revision today, I placed the third scan noted above under "Recent appearances," as it relates to the (currently spoiler-warned) reappearance of Dawnstar in the current "Lightning Saga" crossover story.
The first scan noted above is, I suggest, the best choice for the "superhero box" of standard information. It's a more encyclopedic reference, as it has one of the few unobscured views from the comics of all of Dawnstar's limbs and outfit elements, from her wings to her boots.
For this reason, and because bots have been removing unlinked art from Wikipedia's database, I've restored the LaRocque/Mahlstedt art to the information box. - Greybird 11:11, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
- Today I added a scan, under "Recent appearances," of a panel from Action Comics 859 that fully depicts Gary Frank's redesign of Dawnstar's outfit. This new look has also been announced for use by artist George Pérez in the forthcoming "Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds" mini-series. - Greybird (talk) 03:10, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Citing of original appearance
[edit]Dawnstar originally appeared in the April 1977 issue (#226) of what was then officially named (by its mailing statement) "Superboy," but which had added to the cover, in an equally large logotype, "and the Legion of Super-Heroes." (This last phrase was added to the official name in 1978.) In that transitional period, Superboy was shown as a prominent Legion member, but the Legion had, in effect, taken over the comic which bore the character's name.
I contend that completeness as to this transition calls for citing the subsidiary and unofficial, yet prominent and often-referenced, cover title wording in square brackets. I have thus partially undone the edit of 16 August 2008 that had removed two such uses.
(A related note: Other reference sources inaccurately cite issue 225 of this title for Dawnstar's first appearance. She was mentioned, as "Dawn Star," to be coming in the next issue, but did not actually appear until issue 226.) - Greybird (talk) 10:05, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Legitimate reference?
[edit]A reference to The DC Comics Encyclopedia was added on 1 October 2008. This book, though authorized by DC Comics, has several elements in the cited reference that are highly questionable in their focus and accuracy.
- The "Bounty" entry contains the book's sole mention of Dawnstar. This nearly undefined, malevolent, possessive entity was only linked to Dawnstar as a character for 30 issues in LSH v4, from 1990 to 1992. No reasonable rationale exists for thus vastly downplaying the earlier 12-year history of the character, and her many cameo appearances — and, now, highly active ones — in Legion stories and titles since then.
- Beyond this misclassification, details that the book's entry cites are inaccurate. Dawnstar first appeared in Superboy [and the LSH] #226, not #225 (see also "Citing" item above on this page). Dawnstar was never portrayed, in her debut, her origin story (Superboy and the LSH #240), or elsewhere, as being a bounty hunter before joining the Legion. As the largest mis-emphasis, her most distinctive physical attribute and visual element, that of her wings, was entirely omitted from this book.
- None of these elements were corrected or changed in the 2008 revision of the work, despite my having publicly disputed these mistakes and poor emphases with co-author Bob Greenburger as long as four years ago.
- "Bounty," in DC's current post-Infinite Crisis continuity (see "Recent appearances" in the main article), has been removed from use by the current writers of stories about the (nearly) original Pre-Crisis Legion. The entire "Five Years Later" period, wherein this half-character appeared, is no longer being dramatized — not even in the expansive scenario of a "Legion of three worlds."
- Beyond all this, the brief text in the reference does refer to Dawnstar in other respects, not just in that of "Bounty." If this book were to be cited at all, it should only be as a general source.
In light of these elements, I believe it is much less misleading to not use such a source. I have thus removed the reference to this book.
Although such references are extremely desirable in Wikipedia entries, to note a poorly formed, framed, or researched source can be worse than to note none at all.
I entirely expect that this will be disagreed with, and I hope that any who contend that this should be restored would provide their rationales below. - Greybird (talk) 11:24, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Lesbian?
[edit]Why is this article included in Category:LGBT superheroes? There's a line in the article that states: "Several members of the JSA and JLA tracked Dawnstar's flight ring to Thanagar, but she had left it as a promise to return to a woman strongly implied to be her lover." but I'd suggest that "implied" isn't the same as fact. -- 24.212.139.102 (talk) 15:39, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
- She isn't, but there are people out there with an agenda to "transform" all comic book characters into LGBT. Fixed now. 173.209.110.97 (talk) 19:56, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
