This article appears to contain opinions on Standards-based_mathematics and, indirectly on the NCTM:

1. Labeling "traditional mathematics" as "rigorous" is a biased statement that is not accepted by the majority of the mathematics education community.

2. It is not clear what "conservative" and "concrete" mean when referring to "traditional mathematics"; it looks like they are being used as positive adjectives to contrast with the authors' view of "NCTM standards"

3. NCTM standards do not refer to any mathematics curricula, while "traditional mathematics" typically does

4. Phrases like "tangents" and "irrelevant subjects" are clearly biased; authors of the NCTM standards and authors of curricula that are standards- based would obviously disagree with these labels

5. It is not true that the NCTM standards devalue arithmetic

6. The president of the NCTM has publically stated that the organization does not promote calculator use in place of doing arithmetic

7. The NCTM does not advocate "minimal teacher instruction"

8. The NCTM does not advocate "multiple correct answers" to a traditional math problem. Instead, they advocate multiple (correct) solution strategies. This is in contrast to only using a single standard algorithm for arriving at an answer. Lilaundgelb 12:11, 4 August 2007 (UTC)lilaundgelb[reply]
