Untitled

[edit]
He first gained recognition in America when Irish rock group U2 had a massive hit with his composition, With or Without You. His music had an enormous influence on the many singer-songwriters to emerge in the late 90s, and Damien Rice, Damien Dempsey and Paddy Casey owe an enormous debt to his efforts to put Irish music on the international map.

Allmusic shows U2 as composers of "With or without you".

The impact DO'D had on the above singer is debatable but highly unlikely given the differinging styles of music

Very amusing vandalisation

[edit]

I have nearly killed myself laughing at the following: "Daniel O'Donnell is related to a number of famous Irish comedians, most notably, Aaron O'Donnell and Eddie murphy."

"He has many fans, young and old"

[edit]

is that actually true? ive never met anyone under 50 who had any regard for him. Raemie 00:39, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Saw him in concert when I was 17, am now 26 and still a fan. 64.12.116.14 16:32, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My wife comes from his area of Donegal and have talked to all kinds of people who know him. It is not true that people under 50 don't like him, as Reamie says (above). We haven't met anyone who has a bad word to say about him Thomore (talk) 21:30, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I quite like him, I'm male, and I'm not gay, nor homophobic. 86.187.171.145 (talk) 04:49, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Older Women?

[edit]

"...by far the major part of his fanbase is older women" I would like to know on what evidence this claim is made, as there is no referencing. I think it is somewhat unfair on a man with fans both young and mature to claim that his fan-base is made up largely of old women, most of them spinsters, presumably. While it is true that Daniel appeals to those who may not enjoy loud, dirty music, these people are not necessariily old nor female. Would one expect to read an article about the Rolling Stones stating that their fans are largely men aged over forty? Guv2006 16:47, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the people responsible for making such bland music popular need to be named and shamed.

I agree with the above comment, but that is enough about the rolling stones.

Guv2006 is bang on the money. What about Bing Crosby and Glenn Miller? Would it be apporiate to state in their artciles than most of there fans are either above 60 or dead? 64.12.116.14 16:33, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

None the less it is a common knowledge that Mr O'Donnel's fanbase is largely ( but not exclusively ) made up of old women. Just becuase it is not scientifically quantifyable it does not mean it shoudl not be a point of reference in the wikipedia.

I'd suggest that it is scientifically quantifiable to ascertain the age and sex of O'Donnell's fans. A straw poll could be made at one of his concerts, or members of his fan club could be contacted with questions pertaining to whether or not they are old and female.

Guv2006 22:06, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Every time I've seen this guy on the tube, he's singing sentimental ballads for old ladies and handicapped people. Anyone who denies that his fans are mostly elderly people doesn't know much about him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.212.26.196 (talk) 23:53, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mainly old age pensioners

[edit]

The claim that Danny O'Donnell's fans are mainly OAPs is unsubstantiated. Here are some photos which show the audience at one of his concerts:

http://www.royaltheatre.ie/photos/240703daniel_o_donnell/index.php

If anything, I would rate the audience mixed age, but if anyone can provide evidence for a mainly "old" audience - go ahead. Linguini 23:08, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The comments about O'Donnell's older fans on this page are to be commended. There are other pages on wikipedia (Craig David's in particular where all mentions of Bo Selecta have been removed) where all the negative components of an artiste's persona and fanbase have been removed. Everyone knows O'Donnell appeals to a certain type of audience, this should be 'celebrated' (I usually hate this term) rather than denied. 86.156.172.207 (talk) 15:02, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Radio Show

[edit]

Something should be mentioned about the Radio Show dedicated to Daniel and Friends, that has been on air for the last 10+ years at Gippsland FM, In victoria, Australia. Which daniel often rings in for a chat, as well as other popular singers, such as Marc Roberts, Margo etc. The website for the radiostation is at www.gippslandfm.org.au which has more details.

Success mostly among the elderly and the mentally handicapped

[edit]

is this serious ? any sources ? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Swisscottie (talkcontribs) 17:00, 4 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Don't think so. However... my younger brother is mentally handicapped and likes Daniel. And my grandmother likes Daniel. So one can extrapolate... Squirrel 21:52, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean, your brother is mentally handicapped? In what way? 86.187.171.145 (talk) 04:52, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Danielboy33.jpg

[edit]

Image:Danielboy33.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 22:30, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Long-standing vandalism still polluting this article?

[edit]

See diffs at:

Some changes were never reverted properly?

Compare info at http://www.danielodonnell.org/?p=about.

For now I have just tagged the apparent remnants of this edit with "dubious". --86.41.197.90 (talk) 03:24, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RTE Show

[edit]

I dont think this should be in the article: "In several renditions O'Donnell performs for the Late Late Show on RTE1, giggling and laughter can often be heard emanating from sections of the audience. Sound staff have to increase the volume of the music to drown out the laughter as it is so loud, although if one listened carefully to their TV sets they might just about hear the laughter." I suspect it is some disturbed individuals attempt at vandalism, but even if it were true, it would be a very insignificant piece of information, not worthy of inclusion here.

OLDOLDOLD

[edit]

He has achieved success in both Europe and North America with his mix of country and easy-listening music. O’Donnell primarily appeals to older female audiences, although not exclusively. Reference provided: Scotsman

This cannot be seen as credible. It's simply an article/review without any such substance but the personal opinion of a journalist.--Theosony (talk) 01:52, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Someones taken a hose to this article

[edit]

Long standing, unsourced vandalism, this article needs to be profoundly re-written. Sadly, as a 27 year old male I am unqualified to do this as I have no interest in the man. Are there any blue rinse 65+ widows to hand? Edchilvers (talk) 04:06, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Will blue rinse widowers do? 86.187.160.87 (talk) 04:00, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree

[edit]

I completely disagree with this statement Edchilvers, I think my re-writing of this article before Christmas is enough. I agree that more information could be added, but I think it lives up to Wikipedia's standards in its current form. However, my request to have this page locked from editing has been ignored, as it is subject to constant vandalism.--MaxPride (talk) 18:13, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. I see evidence of anonymous users trying to help. overlinking removed remove whitespace add a word correct name use proper word so you cant tar them all with the same bitch. 24:61, 30 February 2009 (UTC)
Surely "pitch" not "bitch"? 86.187.171.145 (talk) 05:00, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect information

[edit]

The article states, "In 2011, O'Donnell became the first artist to have an album in the UK charts for 24 consecutive weeks.[11]"

While this is what the cited reference says it is plainly incorrect. It is also hard to fathom what the intended statement is.

WikiProject Irish music

It's kinda funny that this article is not in WikiProject Irish music, but I guess technically it should be added.AshSIreland (talk) 13:10, 25 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
