Synthetic "common" names

[edit]

I doubt anyone calls Dactylorhiza foliosa the "richly-leaved dactylorhiza". If they can manage "dactylorhiza", they are managing "foliosa" quite nicely. So-called common names like the one I'm moaning about aren't common at all. They're entirely artificial, devised by people who somehow think that English-speaking people are unable to cope with formal botanical names. These fake names are of no use to anyone.

Using such artificial names on Wikipedia will simply mislead the ignorant into thinking that these names have some sort of validity. I suggest that they be abolished entirely, except that the genuine ones (not the made up for the purpose ones) can be mentioned in passing.

A reminder that if a Russian wants to refer to this orchid, he writes it "Dactylorhiza foliosa."
