I edited this article because the prior listed differences between counseling psychology and counseling is grossly inaccurated. Counselor Educators at the doctoral level not only provide applied work in the field, but also conduct research, teach, supervise, etc. The roles are not that different than a counseling psychologist, they just report to different governing bodies.

redirected

I redirected this page to psychotherapy which extensively covers this topic--whicky1978 talk 13:38, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Restored Article

I restored the original article because counseling psychology is not the same field as psychotherapy. Counseling psychology has a unique history that is different from clinical and school psychology and there are significant aspects of counseling psychology that are not represented in psychotherapy, such as career development theories, multicultural research, and business consultation. Also, many psychotherapists are not counseling psychologists and not all counseling psychologists practice psychotherapy. Nonpareil b5 (talk) 01:45, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Not The Same

Counselling is not the same as psychotherapy, and definitely deserves a separate page. But the word should be spelled with two L's, counseLLing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.141.186.113 (talk) 22:52, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Also, one of the citations (I believe 12) references the salary of a clinical psychologist--not a counseling psychologist. Generally, an individual working in a counseling psychology career will have a lower salary. You might consider changing the citation. --Haydo1Potato (talk) 21:05, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Separate Discipline

I agree with User:Nonpareil. Counseling psychology is a well-defined discipline, overlapping with but separate from Psychotherapy. (I have changed the Counseling Psychology redirect to reflect that fact.) The current article could use a substantial rewrite with more references. JimVC3 (talk) 03:09, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Is this dispute the reason for the "Expert Needed" template on this article? ParticipantObserver (talk) 07:55, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

Fixing up Page

I am working to fix up Wikipedia's counseling psychology info to be in line with what is presented in the Handbook of Counseling Psychology, JCP, and TCP. The spelling of counseling is with one "l" in the Handbook of Counseling Psychology that is published by Wiley, the Handbook of Counseling Psychology that will be published by Oxford Press, professional journals, and APA Division 17, so I will use that spelling. It also makes sense given the origins of the field of counseling psychology. MarylandCSP (talk) 05:02, 5 July 2009 (UTC) 7/5/2009

Thank you!! This page has long needed some substantial editing and re-writing. JimVC3 (talk) 18:01, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
It may take me a few days to get my writing and references together for each of the 5 domains. Please feel free to comment, fix, or let me know about any formatting or style issues. I'm used to writing in APA style, so Wikipedia style is new to me. MarylandCSP (talk) 23:22, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Restructured article, added some more info to history, added theory, research, and practice implications for 3 of the 5 broad domains: counseling process & outcome, supervision & training, and vocational/career. Citations added throughout, so I removed the "citations needed" tag. Still have diversity and prevention/health to go. What other counseling psychology issues should be included? MarylandCSP (talk) 03:14, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

.

I restored the inclusion of multiculturalism and diversity and added references- though it's interesting that the entire sentence was not flagged, since it did not have a citation, but only the diversity and multiculturalism part was cited as problematic.

Also, the information regarding the activities of counseling psychologists has been deleted. Clearly there is a lot of overlap between counseling and counseling psychology, but it would be preferable to clarify the differences and similarities in tasks and activities, rather than to delete them entirely. As it stands, there is now valuable info about program accreditation in the U.S., but that might not carry much weight to readers who do not know about APA and CACREP. By including info on the tasks of counseling psychologists in general, counseling psychologists who are not in the U.S.A. will be better represented. What are your thoughts on clarifying the nature of the field of counseling psychology? MarylandCSP (talk) 03:49, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

I don't believe references to CACREP are appropriate, since it is concerned primarily with accrediting training programs for professional counselors,[1] not counseling psychologists, whose training is generally focused more on scholarly/research activities more similar to those of other psychologists. ..

Under the counseling ethics, I edited information in regards to confidentiality information. I also went through and edited some citations that needed some improving. I am going to continue to do some more editing to this page. I am going through the NBCC webite [2] to find more information. Tiffanyizer (talk) 17:40, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

I wonder if it makes sense to provide an external link to the professional association of counseling psychologists: the Society of Counseling Psychology, Division 17 of the American Psychological Association at www.div17.org ? What do you all think?
