Battle of Cherbourg
[edit]Could someone please write a few lines about the Battle of Cherbourg during the Normandy campaign in World War II? Thanks. --[[a.org/wiki/Schlacht_um_Cherbourg]. olivier 07:30, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
- Could someone translate it then? At least parts of it?--dmakatra 16:56, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- Amazingly, there doesn't seem to be an article about the Battle of Cherbourg, one of the most important battles in the latter stages of WWII, at all in EN Wikipedia. I'll notify the military history Wiki-project and maybe someone will volunteer (maybe I'll do it when I have time).--Caliga10 12:00, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Merger Proposal
[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section.
In the absence of contrary views I have merged the articles. Euryalus (talk) 00:45, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- I propose that Cherbourg Harbour Project be merged into this article, for the following reasons:
- Notability - The Cherbourg Harbour Project article relates to a single infrastructure work in the history of Cherbourg. It is worth noting as part of a larger article on the town, but has too little notability for a standalone page;
- Length - The Cherbourg Harbour Project article has existed for two years as a two-line stub which links to this article and no others.
- Context - the Harbour Project article has no context as a standalone page. Readers would have to also read this page to understand the relevance of the article, and even then it is not especially clear.
- Usefulness to readers - A merge would help centralise information on Cherbourg in a single page, improving the utility of Wikipedia for readers. As neither article is very long the merge would not result in an unwieldy page.
- Views and opinions of others would be welcome. Euryalus (talk) 08:42, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Towns and Cities
[edit]Cherbourg a city subsumed and combined with Octeville and became a town??? Ahem. I know the French are terminally strange, but the growth curves should continue small to large! // FrankB 21:07, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
infobox
[edit]this article could use the settlement infobox which includes a lot more information, like the shield and flag, as well as geographical info. FoCuSandLeArN (talk) 19:57, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
Schools and other institutions?
[edit]Sounds like it was written by the tourist bureau. What about its schools and universities, as in the American model of city and town articles?--A21sauce (talk) 16:22, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
Split?
[edit]With the creation of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, a lot of the content in this article is misplaced. However, rather that simply moving all the historical information to the article about the new commune, I would suggest instead splitting off an article about the historic city of Cherbourg, leaving the articles about Cherbourg-Octeville and Cherbourg-en-Cotentin to cover only the information about those entities during the periods they existed. As a somewhat similar example, we have an extensive article on Brooklyn despite the fact that it was merged into a larger entity, New York City, 118 years ago. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 13:27, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
- The situation is a bit complicated: Cherbourg-Octeville still exists as a delegated commune. But I think your proposal is good. Since the town Cherbourg-Octeville was a rather recent creation, I think it is a good idea to create a new article "Cherbourg" which can contain everything (history, geography etc.) related to Cherbourg proper. And probably also a new article about Octeville. See Dessau-Roßlau as an example. Markussep Talk 11:42, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
- I came here to suggest a similar course of action. Now I see that it has been proposed before, but no action taken. I would consider doing it myself, but I don't know enough about modern Cherbourg to figure out which information should stay in this article and which information should move. --Jtle515 (talk) 07:12, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Military in Cherbourg
[edit]Just an observation. There is an informative section on the units in Cherbourg one of which concerns Clearance Divers Sleeve. Could this be a reference to a Unit with the title Manche and this has not been brought through to indicate 'The Channel' ?

Requested move 27 June 2022
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved. The participants have agreed to split, with separate articles for each administrative division associated with this place, and another article for historic and other non-administrative stuff.
To help facilitate this, the moves will be performed as proposed, as so far this article is about Cherbourg is a mix of Octeville + historic Cherbourg. Cherbourg-Octeville can be later changed to be an administrative district article at any time. (closed by non-admin page mover) — Ceso femmuin mbolgaig mbung, mellohi! (投稿) 07:19, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
– While this is legally the correct name, for English speakers (as this is the English Wikipedia), the common name is, I believe, simply "Cherbourg". Nobody would ever say "I'm getting the ferry from Dublin / Portsmouth to Cherbourg-Octeville" - it just doesn't happen. I picked this article as opposed to Cherbourg-en-Cotentin simply because this one looks like the most developed, and somebody going to the other article by typing "Cherbourg" just looking for travel or military history information would come away wondering why it was so undeveloped. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:58, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
- The logical solution would appear to be that proposed in 2016 by @R'n'B: in the "Split?" section above. The main article would be at Cherbourg, covering the history, economy, landmarks, famous inhabitants, etc, of the city, with Cherbourg-Octeville and Cherbourg-en-Cotentin being very brief articles about the administrative districts that currently make up the city (and are likely to change as French politics dictates). The new Cherbourg article would have most of the contents of the current Cherbourg-Octeville article, but I'm not sure that a page move is the best way of doing this. Tevildo (talk) 20:38, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
- That all makes sense; however as nobody has done that work in the six years since, I think we need to do something just so that casual readers like myself aren't caught unawares. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:00, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
- One solution would be to copy the current contents of Cherbourg-Octeville to Cherbourg and, rather than converting Cherbourg-Octeville to a redirect, stub it down to an article solely about the administrative body. The problem would then reduce to changing the links that currently point to Cherbourg-Octeville - I've not counted them, but there are at least 100. If that's too much work (and I suspect it will be), the simple move will have to do. So, Support, in default of a better solution. Tevildo (talk) 02:11, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

- Split Cherbourg-Octeville#History into a new article on the historic Cherbourg, which is a distinct legal entity from Cherbourg-Octeville. BD2412 T 00:26, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Regardless, the associated Cherbourg dab page would need to be moved, so I've requested the associated move. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 08:20, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
