Article restructuring

[edit]

Hi, I'm User:Hmanck and I was behind the article revamp for the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System. As you can tell, it's a big work in progress right now. The reason why I came over here is to the do the same thing for what I did over there: fix it up and make logistical connections when necessary.

What I have done so far:

  • History section has been put together in one section
  • Isolated out several sections such as fares
  • Added "Rolling stock" and "Future"
  • Corrections regarding proper capitalisation conventions and usage as per Wikipedia policy: nouns are not capitalised, except in the beginning of the word. Proper nouns are capitalised. Only the first letter of the first word is capitalised for the titles and headings, except for proper nouns. I will make these changes when necessary.
  • Corridor -> line, that is the usual convention for most rapid transit systems

One thing, avoid abbreviations/acronyms. Unless the subject matter is mentioned first in its full form with abbreviations introduced in brackets, do not used abbreviations. This goes especially for maps and titles. H-Man (talk) 21:56, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2. Verifiable with no original research:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline.
  • The citations in the lead should be moved inline with the article, if they are not there. They don't need to be in the lead.
  • No need for citations in the infobox, just make sure they are cited inline with the article.

  • Fix tagged deadlinks
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose).

Uncited

  • Background section needs more citations.

  • Cite Line 5 in the table in Future Expansion
2c. it contains no original research.

3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic.
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style).

Expand accidents and incidents section, and make it prose style. Maybe doesn't need much expansion, but at least should be written in prose style.

4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each.
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute.
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content.

For File:Chennai_Metro_Logo.jpg, is it necessary to have both the first and the third copyright notice? They are basically identical. Also, are they correct? It seems to me this image would not fall under those copyright notices.

In the Chennai Metro Phase I template, should Chamiers Road be Nandanam? In general are both of those images up to date? They don't seem to match. For File:Chennai_Rail.png, the source link is broken, so I cannot check the licensing.

6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions.
7. Overall assessment.

I keep meaning to start on this, so I am going to get the review kicked off and will provide comments over the next couple of days. Kees08 (talk) 06:58, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

General: Number of stations in the infobox says 13 operations and 42 phase I. The intro says Phase I is operational; does that mean it should be 55 operational? Same goes for other Phase I things in infobox.

Officially on hold. There are quite a few changes. Upon completion of those changes, I'll run through it again to make sure we caught everything. Let me know if any of the above is unreasonable. Thanks! Kees08 (talk) 20:11, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, i will be taking this review, expect comments soon. 1.02 editor (T/C) 10:29, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Initial comments

[edit]

Looking through the article at a glance, it has improved since the last GA review. However it is still in relatively bad shape with numerous issues largely pertaining to grammar and sentence structure. Large swathes of the article is monotonous with recurring "On ..... x happened, On ..... y happened" staccato style sentences. Please do try make the sentences flow nicer in the article. There are also some MOS violations such as references in the lead section and inclusion on unneeded trivia. A detailed review may take a while given the state of the article.

Detailed

[edit]

Lead

[edit]
  • please only cite references in the lead if not in the body.
  • 'after partially opening the first phase of the project' to 'after the first phase of the system partially opened.'
  • do add the number of stations along with the system length and number of lines
  • if possible do add the type of topology the system uses.
  • 'between the Government of India'
  • 'between 4:30 and 23:00' please use proper time notation.
  • 'The system has also planned to takeover' I dont think the system is planning, please state who or which organisation is doing the planning.
  • Third largest metro is duplicated, please remove the second mention.

History

[edit]
  • Please clarify where or what 'Beach' is.
  • 'This service is now being continued ' When?
  • certain sentences are unreferenced. If no sources are found please remove them.
  • There is a lot of information on who gets what contract for how much. please only state them if notable. 3 whole paragraphs on that is not acceptable.
  • It is mentioned that the TBMs are to be bought from Russia and China, but later it is mentioned that the TBMs came from germany, China US and Japan. Please clarify.

Network

[edit]
  • ' The northern arm is a 9.051 kilometres (5.624 mi)' is there a need for such a large number of decimal places?
  • 'rupees 3770 crores' change to the same style as with the rest of the article.
  • 'The construction activity is expected to be completed by November 2019' Please update.
  • 'the line is planned to be thrown open for commercial operations' What in the world is this!?
  • 'would be for 104 km (65 mi) spreading across 104 stations.' Please reword this with better english.
  • Change 'suo moto' to 'Sua Sponta' and link it (assuming the have the same meaning)

Operations

[edit]
  • Please cut down on the trivia in the ticketing section as per WP:NOTGUIDE just mentioning what types of tickets there are is enough.
  • 'The depot also houses maintenance workshops...'
  • Make it clear how many depots the system has in total (I am assuming 2 from reading,, do clarify)

Infrastructure

[edit]
  • 'a walkway runs along the length...' length of what?
  • Is it possible that the images in the gallery subsection be moved to the relevant sections instead (e.g. pictures of stock in the rolling stock subsection etc.)

Hold

[edit]

More comments coming but i will save the edit here first. You have 7 days to rectify the issues that i have mentioned. If you have any queries, do leave me a message at my talk page or ping me. Thanks 1.02 editor (T/C) 01:56, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sourcing and spot checks

[edit]

Per this revision

The article generally uses local news sources or government press releases, which are reliable in this context. I might suggest more consistent source formatting, like for Refs 99, 104 and 108 for "Chennai Metro" publisher parameter. checkY

I will like to point out, however, that Earwig highlights uses of copyvios, such as:

  • Original source: "The Planning Commission set up a Study Team on Metropolitan Transport in 1965 to assess the adequacy and limitation of existing transport facilities in the cities of Calcutta, Bombay, Madras and Delhi to determine the feasibility of different modes of transport and recommend phased programmes for development of transport facilities." and
  • Article: "the Planning Commission set up a team to study to assess the adequacy and limitation of existing transport facilities, to determine the feasibility of different modes of transport and recommend programmes for development of transport facilities in major metropolitan cities including Madras".

Please check through the article for any other instances of close paraphrasing. checkY

Images

[edit]

The images used here, especially the map, are all CC-BY or BY-SA licensed. The map is self-made. checkY

Copyedit

[edit]
  • The article isn't in bad shape, but the route maps for example could be hidden, because it's pushing and sandwiching the text. checkY
  • The article is comprehensive enough, but I think some rewrites would be required especially for the sentence flow and so on, as highlighted in the previous GA review. I will suggest some copyedits.

Lead

[edit]
  • I suggest following the style for New York City Subway as how the information is presented. So for example, the first paragraph could be rewritten as:
    • The Chennai Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Chennai, India. Operated by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) – a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu – the network consists of two lines and spans 54.1 km (33.6 mi). The system uses standard gauge and has 40 underground and elevated stations. checkY
    • Remarks: I don't think it's needed to mention colour-coded in the lead, since by default we know metro lines are colour-coded. Also, 5th longest doesn't seem to be noteworthy here, unless the metro continues to expand much more (50+km isnt very long tbh). checkY
  • with the construction commencingwith construction commencing checkY
  • Testing began in 2014, and the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety approved the operations in January 2015. On 29 June 2015, commercial operations started between Alandur and Koyambedu stations on the green line with the first underground section between Thirumangalam to Nehru Park operational on 14 May 2017, which was later extended to Chennai Central on 25 May 2018.
    • This chunk could be rewritten as: After testing in 2014, the first segment of the metro between the Alandur and Koyambedu stations began operations on 29 June 2015. checkY
    • Why is it significant to highlight which first underground section opened? I would mention about the blue line, or the completion of the green line. The history mentioned how the metro was planned in two phases, so you can rewrite the history similarly to that. The construction of the first phase could be summarised in one paragraph. checkY
  • As of 2023, three more lines are under construction covering a length of 118.9 km (73.9 mi) in the second phase and Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System is planned to be taken over by Chennai Metro.Three more lines are under construction as part of the second phase, with the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System planned to be incorporated into the metro. checkY expanded the section as suggested above, organizing into two paragraphs

More to come.--ZKang123 (talk) 06:49, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Background

[edit]
  • Chennai Suburban Railway started operating in 1931 on a single electrified line from Chennai Beach to Tambaram with two more lines added connecting Chennai Central with Gummidipoondi in 1985 and Arakkonam later.A single electrified line from Chennai Beach to Tambaram began operations in 1931 as part of the Chennai Suburban Railway. Two other rail lines were subsequently built connecting Chennai Central to Gummidipoondi and Arakkonam in 1985 and [year] respectively. checkY
  • In 1965, the Planning Commission formed a group to study to research of the suitability of the existing transportation network, to ascertain the viability of various ways of transportation and advocate plans for the expansion of transportation amenities in major metropolitan cities including Madras. In 1965, the Planning Commission evaluated the capacity of the transportation network in major metropolitan cities including Madras, and developed plans for further expansion of transportation amenities. checkY
  • Is the MRTS a direct result of the aforementioned 1965 plans? Yes

Phase I

[edit]
  • Add "The" before "Delhi Metro Rail Corporation" checkY
  • tasked with preparingtasked to prepare checkY
  • Remove "detailed" and "Based on the report" checkY
  • I assume "corridors" refer to the lines. yes
  • In December 2007, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), a SPV, was created by a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu to execute the project. In December 2007, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited was established as a joint venture/special-purpose entity between the Governments of India and Tamil Nadu to execute the project.checkY
  • The construction started on 10 June 2009. – Remove "the". Also would just say 10 June that year given it's clear from the preceding sentence what year it is. checkY
  • was awarded to Alstom at a cost of US$243 million....to Alstom for US$243 million checkY
  • a report was submitted to the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety for approval – Approval for what? I might combine this sentence with the later one if it's about conducting safety tests. tweaked a little checkY
  • Did some copyediting for the stations' openings. ok Thumbs up icon
  • Wonder if there are some details of construction challenges. Or delays. yes, added a line on the same checkY
  • Phase 1 extension: when is this extension announced? 2014, added with source checkY
  • A 9 km (5.6 mi) northern extension of the blue line running from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar consisting of nine stations.A 9 km (5.6 mi) northern extension of the blue line was announced in <year> by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The extension would run from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar and consist of nine stations. checkY

More to come.--ZKang123 (talk) 01:34, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Phase II

[edit]
  • Government of Tamil Nadu – add "the". Also similar whenever government organisations are mentioned (e.g. the CMRL) checkY
  • totaling 104 km (65 mi) in length – remove "in length". Also suggest "spanning 104 km" checkY
  • announced an extension in Phase IIannounced an extension of Phase II checkY
  • involving an extension from including a segment/section from... checkY
  • Madhavaram–Sholinganallur line – is this line part of the Chennai Railway or metro? Metro, it is mentioned in the previous line
  • bringing the total length under the second phase to 118.9 km (73.9 mi) with 128 stations. – Separate this clause and rewrite: The second phase would span 118.9 km (73.9 mi) with 128 stations. checkY
  • designed to be smaller than the existing stations operational in the first phase....smaller than the stations of the first phase checkY
    • Also, any reason why? Environmental footprint? Less cost? added
    • questioned the state government on the method adopted in construction of the tunnels... on the construction method of the tunnels and its impact... checkY
  • supply metro coachessupply rolling stock checkY
  • In May 2023, CMRL announced a revised plan for the second phase scrapping nine stations from the original plan.In May 2023, the CMRL announced that nine stations would be scrapped in the revised plan. checkY
  • As per the final plan, the second phase will consist of three lines of length 116.1 km (72.1 mi).Hence, the total length of the second phase was reduced to... checkY
    • Are there any reactions to the reduction? I think also something missing is the community's views of the project as well. Stations were reduced as there were changes in alignment of route and some stations were moved by 100-200m. Norm is to have a station for every ~1km.
  • I'm also curious, for the first and second phases, are there like official groundbreaking ceremonies, minister visits or official inauguration? The Singapore MRT do hold celebrations when a new line segment opens. Being India, that happens at a larger scale and higher frequency. There are functions for everything from ground breaking, events like starting/ending of tunneling, opening of phases and sometimes even for new/modification of stations, bridges etc. The article uniformly mentions only important events as to when groundbreaking was held, line was opened etc. without going into the details of the people involved.
  • I also note this Phase II there isn't also as much mentions of the construction contracts awarded. Agree that compared to Phase I (which still elaborates a lot on the projects even after trimming down a lot), there is hardly any mention of contracts here. As there are three lines over a longer distance and a shorter timeline, a lot of different contracts awarded to multiple companies (rather than Phase I where mostly generalized contracts were given to limited entities) and few were extended (rolling stock, signalling etc.) Will see if I can add something here. checkY

More to come.--ZKang123 (talk) 07:57, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Tata Projects was awarded the contract to construct select stations in October – I guess this is the first stations contract awarded? Would mention this. The first contract was already awarded to RVNL for underground stations, mentioned previously. This is for select elevated stations.
  • The CMRL invited new bids in March 2024 for the supply of 96 train-sets in the second phase – I guess also this is in addition to the previous 78 train sets Alstom is supplying? yes, mentioned so to be clear checkY

Future plans

[edit]
  • In 2022, the state government proposed a revised extension plan spanning 93 km (58 mi) for the three under construction lines of the second phase. – Is this the extension of the second phase? Also I would move this into the Second Phase part checkY
  • In February 2023, feasibility study for the metrolite project was commissioned by the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) – This metrolite, is it related to the light rail project proposed? yes, it is part of a separate section with the word removed to avoid confusion checkY
  • Between late 2023 and early 2024, feasibility reports submitted by the CMRL suggested going ahead with two of the three planned extensions spanning – the two of three being of the aforementioned second phase extension? yes and elaborated checkY
  • I think truthfully the future plans section could be expanded and rewritten a bit more. There seems to be some gaps, especially when a reassessment implied a plan was cancelled or delayed. I would also be more precise in stating which extensions are part of which lines too. Have merged it with second phase as a part of extension and re-organized with the corresponding information w.r.t. the respective lines. checkY

Subsequent sections

[edit]
  • I suggest merging the "network" section under "infrastructure". Also the information there is repetitive and could go into the history section. Just keep: As of March 2024, the operational network consists of two colour-coded lines covering a length of 54.1 km (33.6 mi). checkY
  • In fact, move it to be the first subsection, and the stations subsection right after. Followed by rolling stocks and depot. checkY
  • The financing part could be merged into the respective parts of the history as well. checkY
  • A total of 40 stations are operational along the two lines of the Phase 1 with 22 underground stations.A total of 40 stations, 22 of which are underground, are operational on the two existing lines of Phase 1. checkY
  • The incidents section is a bit trivial, but I would move to the history portion since it covers their construction. In the larger scope of the metro page, I would have shifted them to their respective station/line pages. checkY

Did a little more copyedits on my part. Putting the article on hold as the above issues are addressed.--ZKang123 (talk) 07:01, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
