[edit]Catharanthus roseus is the best-known and most commonly cultivated species in the genus, and most of the information on this species can already be found under Madagascar periwinkle (which name is also used for the species C. roseus, and probably more commonly than "rosy periwinkle"). Unless this article can become a lot more comprehensive, I would recommend redirecting to the Madagascar periwinkle article (or better yet, redirect both to Catharanthus). In October 2013, an unregistered user changed the common name to "Madagascar rosy periwinkle", apparently by combining "madagascar periwinkle" with "rosy periwinkle". This is an extremely obscure "common" name and I'm surprised this change was never caught. I've changed it back, and also added "vinca", a very common name for this plant in the USA. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.163.37.254 (talk) 00:21, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

White flower
[edit]In my view, the new picture of a white flower is not necessary. There is already a better picture of a white form in the gallery. However, if there is a concensus that it must stay I would ask that the contributor makes corrections to the colour balance of the picture, which is way too orange, and crops it so that the flower is at the centre. Intended Edits
[edit]I intend to make the following edits to the live article: 1. Uses
Create sub-heading: Traditional Use: "...cultivated for herbal medicine, as it can be traced back to 2600 B.C.E. Mesopotamia."
Replace: "Many of the vinca alkaloids were first isolated from Catharanthus roseus, including vinblastine and vincristine used in the treatment of leukemia and Hodgkin's lymphoma." with "In the 1950s, vinca alkaloids, including vinblastine and vincristine, were isolated from Catharanthus roseus by when screening for anti-diabetic drugs. This chance discovery led to increased research into the chemotheraputic effects of vinblastine and vincristine." Followed by biopiracy statement
Create sub-heading: Medicinal: Put entire phytochemistry section under this subsection, makes more sense this way
Create sub-heading and content: Research: "Despite the medical importance and wide use, the desire alkaloids (vinblastine and vincristine) are naturally produced at very low yields. Additionally, it is complex and costly to synthesize the desired products in a lab, resulting in difficulty satisfying the demand and a need for overproduction. Treatment of the plant with phytohormones, such as salicylic acid and methyl jasmonate, have been shown to trigger defense mechanisms and overproduce downstream alkaloids. Studies utilizing this technique vary in growth conditions, choice of phytohormone, and location of treatment. Concurrently, there are various efforts to map the biosynthetic pathway producing the alkaloids to find a direct path to overproduction via genetic engineering."
2. Insert Biology section that replaces phytochemistry section. Phytochemistry has more to do with the functions of the metabolic pathways than medicinal use. A general "biology" section can highlight phytochemistry and also other descriptors. --Maria Massaro (talk) 05:57, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
