Release date
Where is the source of the Release date change?? 66.245.97.5 00:52, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,15483,00.html. --b. Touch 22:32, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I think the dates should be updated/edited. It only shows the US and UK dates... this is a worldwide release, gentlemen/ladies. What do you suggest be done, though? Here is a full release date I found. [1] --Ramcosca 23:18, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
Tow-truck's name?
Here it says that Larry the Cable Guy voices "Mater," yet on the actor's page, it refers to the character as "Larry the Tow Truck." Which is it? --Joe Sewell 21:00, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- IMDb says it's "Mater." I'll fix the other page if it's not done already. You can call me Al 18:31, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
- The Full name is "Tow Mater" You can see a zoomed in image of the full name on his door here. http://www.etoys.com/genProduct.html?PID=4715352&ctid=17&_e=447dc&_v=447DC711I5IVaBE5E5C54C52
- Tow Mater, as in tomater.
- But, in the movie, he says his name is simply "Mater, like in Tuh-Mater, only without the tuh." I always took "Tow Mater" as the name of his business. --Joe Sewell 16:28, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- Tow Mater, as in tomater.
The Death of Wally B.?
I've only seen the teaser once, but I remember that (sniff, sniff) the baby bee the truck kills is Wally B.. Is it true, or is my memory a little off? (please be #2, please be #2, please be #2...) --Wack'd About Wiki 17:25, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
Okay, it's two. I checked. --Wack'd About Wiki 00:52, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
- Wally B. was the first ever PIXAR animated film (when it was owned by Lucas). The style and animation features of him are now too crude to be of any use in today's film standards. No, the bee in the trailer was a completly new animation. It was not Wally B. Hope this helps. -- Jason Palpatine 18:11, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
Completion
The film is finished by this time, or so I've heard. So why don't we have much information? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Wack'd About Wiki (talk • contribs) 00:52, 17 November 2005 (UTC).
Why Cars Will Suck
My links have been removed due to bias. So I decided to post them here in the discussion. Does everyone feel my links is spam?
Coincidentally a podcast titled Why Cars Will Suck:Bigger,Longer and In Syncwas uploaded two days prior (June 22, 2006) on to Google_Video pleading for Disney and Pixar to continue their partnership.(Skip to 19:24)
- When I first read about the project, I was aprehensive at first -- especcially with the disapointment I got from THE (not so) INCREDIBLES. But knowing PIXAR, I still had my fingers crossed. I wasn't disapointed. The movie was a lot better than TnsI. -- Jason Palpatine 07:47, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- Refer to the line where you say "My links..." and "I decided..." An objective encyclopedia should not be used to advertise your personal websites. Equally important is the fact that "Why Cars Will Suck" implies it was an opinion article written before the movie was actually released and therefore has no place in a factual discussion. (Try checing out the difference between fact and opinion) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 144.59.12.138 (talk) 13:04, 15 September 2006
Sunoco
It was recently added that the Dinoco sponsorship featured in the film was a spoof of the real oil company, Sunoco. Does anyone have anything that validates that or is it just speculation? If it's speculative, it should be removed. I'll give it some time before I remove it. Mongrel 14:27, 13 April 2006 (UTC).
- Dinoco is not a parody of any gas station, Pixar just made it up. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.85.35.122 (talk) 21:57, 15 April 2006
- Yeah, Dinoco was originally seen in the first movie Toy Story. It's that gas station that Andy's mom, the truck driver, and the Pizza Planet delivery guy go to. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dogman15 (talk • contribs) 20:07, 27 May 2006.
- Dinoco is actually a parody of Sunoco and Sinclair Oil. (GET THE PICTURE?!) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.165.138.45 (talk) 09:32, 10 June 2006
- Whether intended or not, it IS a pun. For this reason, I think it should stay. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 4.245.236.113 (talk) 16:55, 10 June 2006

- I thought the references to "Sunoco" is just that "Dinoco" rhymes. But there were many other fuel companies with the "oco" ending. Maybe Sunoco is more available in the West/California? You don't see many Sunocos in Michigan for instance. Nor Texacos, Citgos and otheros. 82.93.133.130 13:06, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
- A lot of gasoline companies have "oco" in their names because it used to stand for "Oil COmpany" (as in Sun Oil Company = SUNOCO). Thus Dinoco could just be "Dinosaur Oil Company". Powers T 16:12, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
All the advertising names are spoofs - making fun of Nascar - everything is advertising
- Piston Cup - Winston Cup - they had no idea when they started it would now be "NEXTEL Cup"
- Lightyear tires and blimp - Goodyear - also spoofs Toy Story as a bonus.
- Dinosaurs are said to be the source of oil, also a reason.
- Sinclair is a common gas station on the route of old Route 66 - another reason.
- Texaco, AMOCO, ARCO, are other common stations following Rt 66 as Interstate 44 and 55, the later names picked because they fit the Interstate naming system (so Rt.66 could not become an Interstate)

Other Cars
On the poster, there are a whole bunch of other cars- we all need to know their names.
I need to know the name of the car with the grafitti and the spoiler that looks like a ladder.
- His name is Wingo --Mongrel 04:02, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
- How do you know?
- Wingo --Mongrel 07:42, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
- I have seen the movie four times, and I can tell you 100% sure that that is Wingo. Mysterypaw
- Is he some kind of juvenile street racer or something? because the other souped up cars next to him look his age (like Snot Rod)
- Wingo --Mongrel 07:42, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
- How do you know?
- He is indeed a street racer...*spoiler ahead* He is part of the "gang" that causes Mack to fall asleep and causes Lightning McQueen to roll out of the back of the truck onto the freeway. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.158.35.211 (talk) 22:40, 27 May 2006
I also need to know what the name of other NASCARs are.
I also need to know the names of the two Hummer H1s on the poster.
- Actually, the yellow Hummer is The Governator. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 4.245.200.128 (talk) 15:47, May 18, 2006
Then the kid cars, the two Mazda Miatas.
- Lia and Mia are the Mazda twins. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 4.245.200.128 (talk) 15:47, May 18, 2006
- Actually, it's Mia and Tia. (Goof on "Miata", of course.) MacPrince 16:53, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
Then the combine harvester in the trailer.
- That's farmer McReedy —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 4.245.200.128 (talk) 15:47, May 18, 2006
- Actually, he's Frank the bull. --Joe Sewell 16:30, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
Also, the red lowrider (not Ramone).
The I need to know what that really huge vehicle is in the way back of the poster. - Next to the community center, behind Mack.
- Those are RV's, they are in the infield during races, sometimes seen holding two oil barrels on their sides and drinking from them both at the same time. In front of the RV's are tractors. In the movie, tractors = cows. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.158.35.211 (talk) 22:45, 27 May 2006
And the name of the helicopter, bi-plane, and blimp.
- As far as I could remember, they don't have names. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.158.35.211 (talk) 22:45, 27 May 2006
Then the flat-front Dodge Van and the rusty used car (on the French trailer, his whole jaw drops when he sees Sally)
- They are Clink and Clunk --Mongrel 04:02, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, the rustic car is Fred, Clink must be the truck in front of Clunk. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.186.147.27 (talk) 16:08, 14 May 2006
- Is Clink the rusty one? And Clunk is the van, what kind of model is he? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.60.42.212 (talk) 20:44, 19 April 2006
Darrel Cartrip, where in the poster is he.
- He's the car with the flamejob next Chick Hicks. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 4.245.200.128 (talk) 15:47, May 18, 2006
The other NASCARs-
The enraged yellow and black one.
The orange one that looks confused.
The lowrider sports car next to the enraged yellow NASCAR.
Clink and Clunk- who are they?
- See Above. --Mongrel 04:02, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Who is Harv and Darrel Cartrip?
Who is Harv? It says his name on the page, played by Jeremy Piven, I have to know who he his.
- This is Jeremy Piven. You should try doing a search on Yahoo, Google, or anything else before asking. It wasn't tough information to find. --Mongrel 23:03, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- I'm talking about Harv? Is he like the Hummer or something.
- Harv was the agent who was never seen; when he was talking, it showed the phone thingy. Gromreaper 05:16, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- Harv is visible briefly on the phone, is a generic boxy blue car, that's code for K-car, THE generic 80s car.--Wiarthurhu 07:22, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
- The car that appears on the plasma TV when McQueen is talking to Harv is not Harv -- that is just news footage that McQueen is playing. That blue car is Chuck Manifold, the RSN "anchorcar". We can see him again during the "where's McQueen" sequence, just after the Governator speech. So, is Chuck Manifold who is a Plymouth Reliant. -- leandrompm 03:33, 09 July 2006 (UTC)
Who is Darrell Cartrip, what does he look like?
- Cartrip will most likely be one of the other racecars. --Mongrel 23:03, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- He's the flamejob car next to Chick Hicks on the poster. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 4.245.200.128 (talk) 15:47, May 18, 2006
See above, stacked headlights are characterestic of 76 Monte Carlo or 78 Cordoba, but Waltrip did drive a 76 Monte Carlo, so that settles it.--Wiarthurhu 07:22, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
I didn't know...
I didn't know you liked the movie Cars, Tregoweth, or are you hunting me down? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.60.49.138 (talk) 19:24, May 2, 2006
- I'm looking forward to the movie, but, no, I'm not hunting you down, just cleaning up the talk pages that are moving away from discussing the article. tregoweth 01:58, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- But seriously, those character comments, I want to know the names of certain characters. If you find out what the name of the Hummers are, please tell me? Thanks. Ray tracing?
Did they ray trace the whole movie? -- Toytoy 12:46, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
- The whole movie is rendered using PhotoRealistic RenderMan, which either does reyes rendering, ray tracing or a variety of Global illumination algorithms even more demanding than ray tracing. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 13:00, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
Information Seriously Needed
The film is so close to release, we need more characters and models listed in the "cast" section of the article.
We need these characters and their voices and car models.
- Wingo (I'm surprised no info was revealed about this character, he is the most complex)
- That must be a joke. Wingo takes up maybe 60 seconds total in the movie.
- Snot Rod (as by looking at the new trailer, he looks like a wannabe)
- Boost
- Turbo
- The Ferrari (on the French Trailer, he randomly sees Luigi and Guido)
- The Ferrari is Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher. *spoiler* He stops in to buy tires from Luigi near the end of the movie.
- Harv
- Darrell Cartrip
- The Hummers
- The lowriders
- The minivans (seen on the Pixar podcast, they are vacationing in radiator springs)
- the other racecars
we NEED that info, we got to do further research on this movie. Whos with me? 67.186.147.27 16:19, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
- BTW, does Red talk at all in the film? Joe Ranft died during production. 4.245.173.96 01:13, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Visual References in Poster
Just wanted to point out a couple of visual art/architecture references in the final promotional poster. I don't know if they're significant enough to be placed on the article page, but:
- Near the street, in the back, is a stack of tires possibly designed to mimic the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
- Yes, it is, but in the film, it's called the Leaning Tower of Tires. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.60.49.220 (talk) 19:45, 24 May 2006
- The tall rocky formations which form the horizon are designed to resemble Cadillac Ranch.
- Yes, that's true, I have brochure for the film that says that. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.60.49.220 (talk) 19:45, 24 May 2006
- Does anyone know what, if anything, the round butte in the middle distance is meant to resemble? It looks familiar and is obviously a contrived shape, rather than a natural landform.
216.78.53.168 18:20, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- Looks like a gas cap to me. Maybe a radiator cap (and thus, Radiator Springs)? MacPrince 04:56, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
- I'm more curious about the "RS" inscribed just beneath it. =) Powers 19:22, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Looks like an air cleaner. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 205.242.229.37 (talk) 17:37, 22 June 2006
- I think the butte is supposed to resemble like a giant wheel or something car related, like a motor since it is a film about cars. Did anyone notice that Flo's V-8 Cafe resembles Googie-style gas stations from the 1950's? (That did that with Dinoco on Toy Story). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.60.49.220 (talk) 19:45, 24 May 2006
Year model of Lizzie
What year model is Lizzie? because Model Ts were made from 1908 to 1927. User:Imax80
No plot details allowed?
Why was all of (the beginning of) my detailed plot synopsis deleted?[2] The notation was "an overly detailed summary is not necessary" but I'll cite The Matrix as just one example of other movies that goes into just as much specific detail of explaining the plot of the movie. I can possibly write a less detailed summary but before I do more work to have it deleted, I'd like somebody to point out some specific Wikipedia guideline to backup this decision. Fife Club 04:13, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
On an unrelated side note, why is the release date still June 9th? It already had it's world premiere to the general public on May 27th. I know that it didn't open nationwide yet but doesn't 40,000 people people seeing the movie still count as being released?
- It's not that plot details aren't allowed; it just seemed like overkill, particularly as (1) the movie isn't even out yet, and (2) the plot isn't really complex enough to require transcribing everything that happens. But if you really want to add it, go ahead, and I'll leave it alone (though I reserve the right to fix typos and such :) ).
- Also, the date that it is released to multiple theaters is generally considered the release date; world premieres usually aren't counted. See the IMDb, where premieres and official opening dates are usually listed separately. tregoweth 15:23, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
Regal or Monte Carlo
The Cars website does not identify the 80s GM stocker. I first identified as a Regal, then it was changed to Monte Carlo, now it's a Regal again. I think the bevel nose, and the fame of the Buick stockers makes it a Buick. Any other opinions?

Voice cast
We need the voice casts for these characters-
- Wingo
- Snot Rod
- Boost
- DJ
- The Govenator
- Mia and Tia
There are also several other actors and actresses listed that don't have characters, like Dale Jr., Alonso, and the others.
Mater/Lightning picture flipped
The third picture on this article (of Mater and Lightning from the Teaser Trailer) has been flipped. If you look closely at it, Lightning's "95" on his side is backwards, making it look kinda like "2e". Is there any way this can be fixed? dogman15 23:01, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
- It was also obviously backwards because Mater's headlight was on the wrong side. I fixed this by flipping the image and re-uploading it. - Brian Kendig 22:25, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
Character cards
Here are a few high-res character card images. http://www.movieweb.com/movies/film/52/2752/gal2404/index_hi.php There are others but I haven't been able to find them in this high of resolution, especially Doc Hudson.
As for Doc Hudson, where are the stills (and merchandise!) with the character in its racing paintjob? I have a stack of Doc Hudson stuff, it'd be bigger if Disney would produce some with the racing scheme!
Lightning's design inspiration
The entry says Lighting is a completely fictional car based on a Ford GT-40. After looking at that link, it looks nothing like the lead character in Cars. Are there any published interviews that states what model is? To me, he has some Dodge Viper-ish elements more than anything.

Trivia
The trivia section should be deleted. It's full of original research. We should wait on this section until something verifiable can be cited, such as a DVD commentary. -- Malber (talk • contribs) 15:00, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
Delete it. The trivia section is mostly sillyness. "Mack wears a hat, like a trucker" (or maybe a fisherman, or a carpenter); "Doc Hudson has white-wall tires but no curb finders."; "It's doubtful that dinosaurs existed in the Cars world." Maybe someone should add that it's doubtful that car can really talk. -- Rsduhamel (talk • contribs) 14:40, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- Does it qualify as original research if it's blantantly obvious? If I look up at the sky and say "The sky is blue?" are you going to call that "original research" and make me delete it? (Actually, "blue" would probably be considered subjective. And then someone would ask me to define "sky." And "the." And "is.") —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 144.59.12.138 (talk) 13:08, 15 September 2006
- To answer the question, yes. Wikipedia cannot declare the sky is blue no matter how blue it is. It can only report that "it has been published b y reliable sources that the sky is blue." Sucks, I know. But that's an encyclopedia. Dikke poes 13:08, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
Removed Doc Hollywood material
I removed this list. Much of the information was original research comparing both films. Most of the inline citations listed were from minor critics, and the references to Doc Hollywood were slight. I did incorporate the AP review into the main paragraph and added a ref footnote. I just don't find the similarities that remarkable and the comparisons don't contribute to the article. The plot to Doc Hollywood wasn't all that original to begin with. "Fish-out-of-water" stories are quite common, and an argument could be made that Doc Hollywood ripped off the TV show Northern Exposure. -- Malber (talk • contribs) 17:04, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
- I'm cool with this - just as long as the DH wikilink stays in the article. Reusing an everyplot is one thing, but reusing several exact plot elements of another filmmaker's lower-budget film without attribution or appreciation is another. Very many (50+?) reviewers call Cars a "DH with cars". Being Pixar gives them no right.
- And yeah, the trivia section already takes 35% of the length of the article. It's no longer funny. --Perfecto 18:43, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
song title?
anyone knows what plays during the part where the dj and other tuners come in the movie...
if i remembered right it was quite heavy on the bass
Dstan 12:49, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- I'm curious about this, too.. Sounds like an interesting song if you're into that sort of thing (which I am, for what it's worth) Madmaxmarchhare 16:55, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
It's Kenny G, popular in late 80s, forget the title, but it was his biggest hit. See casting for DJ, and moral, removed, that Kenny G may impair alertness in driving. --matador300 18:09, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
- ERRRR.. thanks for the try, but we were looking for the song that they are playing when they first drive up to Mack Truck, not what they put him to sleep with. You know what? I went and saw the movie again and missed the song credits because I was once again watching all the other stuff going on the screen. DOH! Madmaxmarchhare 02:11, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- Could be just something generic that Pixar came up with? I wouldn't know myself (as I wasn't totally paying attention to the music), but that is my guess PYLrulz 10:16, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- That's always a possibility--if I would have been looking at the credits instead of everything else, this might all be settled.. until then, then.. Madmaxmarchhare 18:46, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
It called "Rollin' in the rearview" Performed by Jabu. This was taken off the DVD credits staff roll. BTW, the song used to put Mack to sleep is called "Songbird" by Kenny G DCJoeDog 15:53, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
Arnold Schwarzenegger
I highly doubt that Schwarzenegger was in this, the Hummer is only shown for 3 seconds, and that was someone at Pixar mimicing his voice. For now, Arnold is the governor of California, he wouldn't have time to visit any movie studios. Site a source for this claim, thank you. User:Imax80.
- Although I do believe you're correct in asking that this be verified, in reality, no one has to "visit" any studies to do voice-overs nowadays (for quite some time). High-quality equipment could have easily been taken to his locale. Madmaxmarchhare 23:04, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- I thought it sounded like an imitation, myself. —tregoweth (talk) 02:34, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
- According to IMDB (and I looked through the list 4-5 times, and there is no mention of Arnold Schwartzenegger, however, they do not have the "Governor Hummer" listed in the credits as well, so either Schwartzenegger did do the part, but was uncredited, or it is someone impersonating him. More investaging will probably be necessary. [3], heres the link PYLrulz 10:24, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
For the Birds birds
How are you even sure that those birds are the ones from that short? You pass them in less than a second. Everythingthat lives in that movie is a car, even the flies are mini-cars.
- It may be worth mentioning, if only because a lot of people think it's a For the Birds reference, whether it is or not. —tregoweth (talk) 02:34, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
- A lot of people coudn't see it. So how would they they're the birds from For the Birds.
- Oh, I think those are *definitely* the Birds birds... They made the exact same sound. If they hadn't made the sound I might have missed it, but they're definitely them. Also, I was a little unclear who the airplanes are... I kept looking for them to be cars of some kind but it never panned out... Aaronw 04:27, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think we'll know for certain until the DVD release, but considering Pixar's penchant for slipping in references to their other movies and the fact that the sound (and blur of color) seemed to match the short's characters perfectly, I'd have to assume that the "For The Birds" birds are in the movie. Imdwalrus 07:47, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- They are. I saw them. If I could prove it, I would. dogman15 05:25, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- No need to prove it, I have the DVD and I went frame by frame and they are the birds from the short film DCJoeDog 16:05, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- My question is, I know those are the Birds (you can see them on frame by frame as Joe said), but I don't recall being able to hear "distinctive chirps." The person who added that line is a good-faith editor, I checked; but I thought the Life Is A Highway song was playing suring that scene???? Someone let me know here. Dikke poes 13:11, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
- If you're referring to my edit, I added the word "distinct", but only as a reword. I felt the word "unique" (added previously) was not the best choice of wording. Since I don't have the DVD yet, I can't verify the original editor's comment about the chirps being heard. Since several editors here, though, say the sound is there, I trust it's there. It does seem a bit WP:OR-y, though (not to mention that the whole Trivia section, especially one so long, is generally frowned upon here), so I won't complain if it's removed. --Fru1tbat 13:38, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

UK Running Time?
Is there a source other than the IMDB for the UK running time of 121 mins (vs 116 for the USA)? Seeing as the movie doesn't open in Britain for another month, I'm wondering where this info came from. I'd heard a rumor from a friend connected to the animation world that some stuff that bored children in test audiences was trimmed before the US opening, which has me quote curious as to whether a longer cut is being released in the UK and perhaps elsewhere.Andrewjnyc 01:46, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Good Article nomination has failed
The Good article nomination for Cars (film)/Archive 1 has failed, for the following reason(s):
- Too many fair use images; reduce to five.
- There are only four. Jason Palpatine 22:02, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- Has only half of its sources cited.
- ==Trivia==, a trifle for high-quality pages, needs to be merged elsewhere in the article.
- A little too long (42 K's at current). Maybe the plot needs to be simplified and shorter, and maybe a few sections removed.
- As of writing, the film in question has been out for a month now. (Current events do not make good subjects for articles of this calibre.) Wait until the end of the year or early 2007 to re-submit.
- In the meantime, see The Care Bears Movie and Bionicle: Mask of Light for examples of GAs dealing with animated films.

Nascar and various rules.
Nascar has a green, white, checker (G-W-C) rule now. The drivers are given one chance to finish the race under the Green Flag if under 10 laps to go a caution flag comes out. Once the race track is cleared for racing, they are given the green flag, then the white flag, then the checkered flag. If, at any point with this rule in effect, the yellow flag has to come out once again, the race will then be finished under the yellow flag. This rule was brought about because of fan reaction and acceptance from the Craftsman Trucks Series, then gradually moved up to the now Nextel Cup.
Another rule for Super Speedways (like Daytona or Talladega), is if just over 5 laps to go, the race can be red flagged, but, if under 5 to go, the the race must try to continue with the G-W-C rule. Along with that rule, Super Speedways are the only tracks with an out-of-bounds rule, where the drivers are not to advance their position going under the yellow line to the driver's left. If forced, the rule is usually ignored, but if intentional, the driver is black flagged and must perform a drive through penalty through pit road at pit speed (around 45 MPH). This rule was brought about to control the wild fanning out on backstraights of Daytona and Talladega, which usually ended up in a large wreck in or before Turn 3.
As far as I know, there isn't a rule against a car pushing another car over the finish line. I'll do some more reasearch on it.
--64.24.85.40 03:07, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Justin Banner jbanner@gmail.com
- Actually, there is a rule about it (heard about it one time during this one NASCAR show, I guess years back, there were a few instances of drivers (mainly teammates) pushing one another across the finish line if the race was gonna be a fuel milage race, so that rule got changed around. The crash
According to Richard Petty, in the reference cited at the end of the paragraph, the crash was an exact recreation of his crash in the 1988 Daytona 500. After viewing the video of Petty's actual crash it's obvious he is giving some artistic license (mainly, in the real crash the car stayed on the track and there was a pretty nasty secondary collision in the real crash). However the general motion of The King in the film crash is pretty close to a frame-by-frame recreation of the motion of Petty's car in the first half of the real crash.
I removed the reference that the crash may have been Rusty Wallace's 1993 crash mainly because Petty says the crash was his. Unless Rusty Wallace comes back and says "no, that was my crash" Petty's opinion should stand. Rsduhamel 16:30, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- I know what your talking about, and the thought of the 1988 crash never crossed my mind. I was personally thinking it was a replication of his crash in Darlington in 1970, or the said Rusty Wallace crash. PYLrulz 08:18, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
The King's Crash
According to the trivia section for Cars on www.imdb.com, The King's crash is a frame-by-frame re-creation of Petty's crash at the 1988 Daytona - I added that to the Trivia section here with the Spoiler warning either side of it. Looking through the article here again, I see this contradicts the information in the Individual Character section for The King, where it is described as a re-creation of Rusty Wallace's crash at Talladega in 1993. One of these facts is correct - which one is it?
Whichever is correct, I think the spoiler warning should be used wherever talking about the crash happens - it is quite a pivotal moment in the film.StephenBuxton 06:55, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
Route 66 song: Not really a blues
Not to tread on another writer's work, but the article refers to the song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" as a blues song. I would propose that it should be called a pop song: written by Bobby Troup, first popularized by Nat "King" Cole. Sure, it's been sung by the likes of Chuck Berry and the Stones, but even the Wiki article Route 66 (song) refers to it as a pop standard. --MarkMcDermott 13:55, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
Removed one "reference"
I removed the reference that read: "*In Finding Nemo when it shows the fish escaping at the end, it shows Luigi pass by. But many confuse it being on the escape plan scene. Ages
I don't know where else to put this. Are there any sources that verify any of the character's ages? I haven't been able to find any, and there have been people claiming that Mater is 19, and Chick is 11. I have changed all relevant ages to 'Unknown' until a source can be found verifying what age they are. RMS Oceanic 14:54, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not sure the concept of "ages" is useful for this article (or List of Cars characters, or any of the individual character pages), since "age" appears to be based on model year, making Sally 3 and Lizzie 82. It's clear (given that Sally is an '02 Porsche) the cars are "born" adult, so the usefulness of knowing that Sally is a 3-year-old model is virtually nil. Powers T 20:11, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Then what is the best way of dealing with it? You can't delete the age category, because it still appears on the character box. I think we need to reach a resolution and apply it to all the characters, because the constant switching of ages everytime I look at an article is annoying. RMS Oceanic 09:41, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
I don't think the category is very relevant, or supported in the context of the movie. It'd be one thing if the DVD release came out and put their ages in some character biography section, but until that, I say delete the category. FrozenPurpleCube 09:56, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
- I've created a new template, Cars character, which is more customised for them, and doesn't have an age category. I've tested it on Doc Hudson and Lightning McQueen, and I think it looks alright. Until we get an age info file from an official Pixar source, use this template. RMS Oceanic 12:24, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Since the article is very long, I was thinking that a couple of sections could be made into their own articles, or redistributed into other articles, to reduce the size of this one.

The tuner cars
Okay, you may think Wingo, DJ, Snot Rod, and Boost are real life models. But they aren't, you know why? Because the diecast toys prove this.
If there is a diecast model of a real car character, a license of the dealer appears at the bottom (for instance, The King has a Chrysler License under it). But the four tuners don't have a license under them so therefore they are lookalikes of the models you all think they are. Imax80 21:52, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
- Or maybe those companies in question didn't insist on a copyright notice. In the Die-Cast line of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, Gordon the Big Engine is clearly based on the LNER Class A3 (Such as Flying Scotsman) and Duck the Great Western Engine is clearly based on the GWR 5700 Class tank engine, but on all packaging for both characters that I've read, I have yet to see such a copyright notice by the owners of the copyright. Changes between the theatrical release and the DVD release
So far I've noticed two small changes between the theatrical release and the DVD release of this film:
- When the "For The Birds" birds go by on the telephone line, in the DVD release they now make a squeaking noise. In the theatrical release, I don't recall a sound effect for them.
- During the end credits, Sarge is shown putting four SUVs through boot camp. One of the SUVs has two lines. In the theatrical release, I remember it sounding like Arnold Schwartzenegger; on the DVD, it definitely does not sound like Arnold - it's more of a slacker kind of voice.
Can anyone verify these changes, and do you know of any others? - Brian Kendig 05:58, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
- You're wrong on both counts. In the theatrical versions I attended, the birds did indeed make a squeaking noise. As for the SUV, you might be thinking about the Montage of press reports after Lightning McQueen goes missing, where a Yellow German-Sounding Hummer states "Lightning McQueen must be found, at all costs!". The green Hummer at Sarge's Bootcamp always sounded like a slacker. RMS Oceanic 08:10, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

It is not a near certainty like the writer made it appear to be, and hasn't happened in 15 years.

- I verify it as well, it's hella blurry but the shape is there, also you can clearly see the Pizza Planet truck behind the announcer cars and to the left of the "Elvis" RV before the start of the final race DCJoeDog 16:48, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
Sarge
Anyone hear why they didn't use R. Lee Ermey for Sarge? It seemed to just beg for him.--BenWoodruff 15:21, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe that's the reason why they did not use him. -- Jason Palpatine 21:30, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

OK. How about, to trim off some of the fat, we delete the week-by-week box office performance list. Seems unecessary. -- Jason Palpatine 08:29, 4 December 2006 (UTC) (speak your mind | contributions)
- What? No comments? Jason Palpatine 21:31, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- I don't know if it should be deleted completely, but it could at least be trimmed down to 10 weeks. What I'd focus on trimming instead:
- Story - I'm not sure quite how best to do it, but it seems like this should be edited down such that it's not just a play-by-play of the movie (details that are important when watching aren't necessarily important in an encyclopedia article about the film).
- NASCAR differences - Yes, the movie is based directly on NASCAR, and the comparison is a valid one, but there's a lot of extra detail there that could be edited out.
- Script references - More trivia that could probably be edited down.
- Goofs - Unnecessary, probably. Leave stuff like that to fansites or IMDb.
- Note that per Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/Style guidelines, fan facts shouldn't be included at all (not that the rest of the article necessarily follows that page's guidelines either). This article is pretty much filled with them. I agree that they're fun to read through, but as the article size is a problem, we have to consider the bigger picture here.

Ahh, ruined info
In the very beginning, as you can see, someone gorged the starting paragraph with some vulgar junk-- I would happily try and revert it to the original state but I can't remember what was there at first --Uzzo2 04:59, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, the opening paragraph contains tons of misplaced info (that appears later in the article). No need to repeat the NASCAR puns or every voice talent in the movie. Work on that too while you're editing the top of the page, please. SpikeJones 20:17, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
Oh Sorry, they must have already deleted it about time you got here --Uzzo2 05:05, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
Speeding in the Pit
" *In the movie, Lightning McQueen appears to speed out of pit road to beat the pace car, and stay on the lead lap. In NASCAR, a driver would be penalized for doing that by being required to restart the race at the end of the longer of the two lines of cars that line up behind the pace car. During the final ten laps of the race, when the cars one or more laps down are not allowed to line up to the inside of the lead-lap cars, the penalty is to start at the end of the one line of cars.
- McQueen did not, however, speed in the pits. He only accelerated once he crossed the pit exit line. Had he broken the speed limit within the pits, he would have had to serve a stop and go black flag on the very next lap under NASCAR rules. The movie then depicts McQueen just catching up to the pack as the green flag is waved. NASCAR dictates the drivers be lined up before the green flag is issued."
Did he speed off or not? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.12.157.49 (talk) 08:20, 11 December 2006

Doc Hornets big crash is given as 1954, however, one of his piston cups can clearly be seen to be dated 1955. surely if he won the piston cup that year, his career would have been renewed? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.12.110.220 (talk) 12:26, 11 December 2006

matching Route 66 locations to the film
There's a fairly comprehensive illustrated list http://route66news.com/2006/06/09/a-route-66-guide-to-the-cars-movie (en français: http://webstern.e-monsite.com/pages/la-route-66/le-film-cars-et-la-route-66.html ) which matches the fictional characters and locations to whatever real-life people and places inspired them (for instance: Cozy Cone Motel is primarily based on the Wigwam Motels, with the "100% Refrigerated Air" neon slogan from Blue Swallow Motel and the office based architecturally on Roy's Motel and Café). It might be worth checking any character or location lists in this article against that one to see if any notables have been omitted?
It looks like we're missing many (or most) of the Route 66 references... for instance, the Wheel Well Motel is based primarily on Wagon Wheel Motel (or to some degree the Wishing Well Motel, Illinois, demolished 2007). It would seem far more is being done here to match Route 66 people to movie characters than to match Route 66 landmarks to movie locations. 66.102.83.61 (talk) 05:16, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
There are a few "it's not on my GPS" references through the film. One is when Harv sends Mack to pick up Lightning, one is the Minny/Van pair which are depicted as lost as a running joke throughout. "Van and Minny, the two minivans who came to Radiator Springs, appear to have lost their way and are stranded in the middle of the desert, dusty and tired (due to Van's reliance on GPS navigation rather than standard maps, which Sally had offered him), and Van is seen to have gone insane." Most likely their beef isn't with the satellite Global Positioning System itself (which should work in any unobstructed location, including ships at sea) but with the pre-stored highway maps in the devices (which likely know a full set of current highways by number, but may be displaying key historic highways as mere local county roads if that's the last known designation). The '66' designator is beginning to return to a few maps as 'historic 66' now (Google Maps added it in the last year or two, Rand McNally show a '66' shield on a brown background as 'historic route' - although one 2012 misprint bypassed Kansas) but in '06 likely was only on printed maps like the eight-state "here it is!" series. The proper way to break GPS itself (and not just the stored map) is to drive through a radio-frequency obstacle course like New York City where buildings obstruct or reflect signals to create an unusable mess.
As for "Radiator Springs used to be a popular stopover along U.S. Route 66, but with the construction of Interstate 40 bypassing the town, it was effectively taken off the map."? This is a Disney film. There are no nuances such as "effectively", if it's taken off the map, it's taken off the map *literally* in a flashback in which Sally, on the scenic lookout in front of the Wheel Well Motel, shows a map with '66' and 'Radiator Springs', then 'I-40' appears under construction on a parallel path with no off-ramp to get back to the old road, then 'I-40' becomes a solid line on completion, then the red path of 'US 66', the '66' highway shield, the geographic place label "Ornament Valley" and the Radiator Springs town all immediately and simultaneously fade right off the printed map entirely, leaving just a thin black line where the mother road used to run. The same map is shown at the beginning of the closing credits, with 'historic 66' (now marked as a brown historic shield) and 'Ornament Valley' just as quickly reappearing (with 'Radiator Springs' back on the map two seconds later) as affirmation that "someday we'll find a way to get this place back on the map". All very literal. Replace the word "effectively" with "literally" here. 66.102.83.61 (talk) 16:00, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

The track on which the opening race (Motor Speedway of the South) takes place is based on an enlarged version of Bristol Motor Speedway.[citation needed]
should be sourced to <ref>{{cite news|title='Cars' touts a real-life look |date=6/15/2006|author=Mike Snider|publisher=[[USA Today]]|url=http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2006-06-14-cars-nascar_x.htm }}</ref> which says:
Longtime racing fans will recognize that the inspiration for the race track in the film's opening scene is the Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. "Every year in August they have a night race," Lasseter says. "It is one of the most exciting races in NASCAR." But the film's Motor Speedway of the South is a 1-mile track, compared with Bristol's half-mile. "I needed the straightaways to be a little longer for some of the scenes," he says. "And I also wanted to get the fans in the infield."

In Cars_(film)#Development "Wallis then led eleven Pixar animators in rented white Cadillacs on two different road trips across the route to research the film.[citation needed]" requests info already cited in other articles.
Stops on this tour included "Doc" Walter S. Mason Jr.'s former Best Western in Clinton OK, Dawn Welch (Sally's) Rock Café in Stroud OK and Fran Houser (Flo's) Midpoint Café in Adrian TX. The US Route 66 research for the film is mentioned in the WP:RS on those pages:

Just steal one or more of these (as they're all already cited in en.wp) and use them. There was also extensive research at NASCAR tracks and auto manufacturers; those sources would likely be in the pages on Mater (Cars) and Lightning McQueen if you need them. 66.102.83.61 (talk) 01:39, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Harv
Harv is not played by Jeremy Pivens, rather by Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear UK; this YouTube video outlines his voice-work in the film, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRrtwuEyby8). So please, fix the miscrediting in the "Main Characters" section.
- Not done - Pivens voices Harv in most English-language prints of the film; Clarkson only voices him in the UK release. rdfox 76 (talk) 03:06, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Third film rumors
I've added in some information about the rumors over the third film, as someone tried to create an article about it. The rumors got just enough coverage to where I think it'd be worthwhile to keep a brief mention about it in the sequel section. I'm mentioning it here just to let anyone know that it is way too soon for the third film to have an article, since we don't even know if it's really getting made or not. Trivia section
- The section of this article (removed and now restored) would fall under WP:TRIVIA, and in generaion, unless a fact is sourced by a reliable source, it should be removed as original research. An example of how such a section should work is at Wreck-It Ralph, where "Video game cameos and references" has a source for every reference made. I do think some of this can be done for Cars, but the sources must be there or else this is TVTRopes-style material, not appropriate for WP. --MASEM (t) 07:04, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
- Often one man's trivia or cruft is another man's important relevant matter. And I have seen elsewhere the statement that matter in a book or movie which is accessible to the public, is its own reference to Wikipedia direct descriptions in an article about that book or movie. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 07:14, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
- Trivia is not appropriate, as Masem pointed out, and the fact that the vast majority of that swave of text is not referenced in the slightest makes it even less appropriate. You shouldn't have restored it in the first place, let alone doing so a second time; the fact that no one else had tried to should show you that it has no consensus, and no place here. The Yellow Car Development
The development section claims that the original script "The Yellow Car" was planned for release on June 4, 1999, and that the film was then scrapped in favor of Toy Story 2. However, the reference that's provided to back up those two statements, an article from the Huffington Post, does not say this anywhere; it doesn't discuss the release of the film anywhere but simply talks about the creative changes. I tried to replace the faulty references with a "citation needed" tag but my edits were reverted... I am not very familiar with the policies of Wikipedia so perhaps someone better placed should deal with this error.--Gray Catbird (talk) 01:26, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
