Carpender is a surname distinct from Carpenter, Carpentier & Charpentier and Zimmerman. Carpender is a strictly English variant while Carpenter is from the Norman French. Carpentier & Charpentier is strictly French. Zimmerman is strictly German/Swiss.

Smashing them together without explanation attacks the ethnic background of each. Yes, lingustically they all may mean the same or have the same root meanings, but the heritage and name spelling means much much more. The same idea goes for place names.

Merging Read, Reid and Reed surnames would be similar problem, but that is not done even though they have the same basic name history.
