Overlap with Bylaw
[edit]Nowhere is this article linked to Bylaw, and I'm wondering, therefore, to what degree the editors are aware of that article, and to what degree it duplicates that article. I appreciate that's a more general article, and this one is specifically about the UK, but this one does go into the technical aspects in much the same way that Bylaw does. -- JackofOz (talk) 12:19, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
- Well, now you mention it ... I was in the process of rewriting the main Bylaw article, which I have now done. My view is that that article is general (bylaws anywhere) whilst this one is specific.Dmvward (talk) 16:45, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
bye-laws vs. byelaws
[edit]This article uses both bye-laws and byelaws but doesn't explain the difference, or why it uses one instead of the other; I assume this is the result of different editors having different preferences. Based on what I have read, it seems like all spellings (byelaws, bye-laws, by-laws, and bylaws) are equally acceptable..) but that bye-laws and byelaws are more common to the British English spelling (also seen in Hong Kong/Chinese English spelling, and probably other former British colonies). However, perhaps it should have a sentence or paragraph about this, and then be internally consistent in the article. Centerone (talk) 02:44, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

Correct Spelling
[edit]It is spelt "by-law", *not* "bye-law". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jacob Newton (talk • contribs) 14:55, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
In the UK it is, formally, "byelaw" - see e.g. section 235 of the Local Government Act 1972 - although various combinations with and without an 'e' or a hyphen are colloquially acceptable. Dotdotdotcomma (talk) 15:26, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
