This sentence is nonsense as it stands: "The face is atypical in a topological sense in that none of the characters has a circular counter-form (hole)."
Topology isn't concerned with whether a hole is circular, square, etc. but only that the hole exists. And, the phrase "circular counter-form" seems to add nothing that isn't covered by the gloss "hole."
I don't know whether to simply change it to "This face is atypical in that none of the characters have a hole," or whether that statement is even correct or useful or non-self-apparent (or even original research).
