Geotag

[edit]

I corrected the geotag. The previous coordinates actually marked a parking garage next to BMA. On most online mapping services, including Google Earth, the current location of the BMA is a surface parking lot. Today, nothing of the lot (or Speedway Ave directly along the museum) remains. Some proposed additions

[edit]

History

[edit]
  • The Blanton Museum is currently preparing for a major exterior transformation of its grounds and plaza designed by Snøhetta. That effort was significantly aided by the surprise announcement, at a February 2019 gala, that the museum would receive a $20 million gift from The Moody Foundation, to fund the project and continued free admission on Thursdays.[1]

Latin American art

[edit]
  • The Blanton’s collection of Latin American art includes some 2,500 objects and at least 600 artists.[2]
  • In 2016, the Blanton created a curatorial position dedicated to Spanish Colonial art; in 2019, that position was endowed with a $2 million gift from the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation. In 2019, the museum acquired 119 paintings, sculptures, furniture and silverwork dating from 1600 to the early 1800s, from parts of Latin America that now encompass Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru, from the collection of Roberta and Richard Huber.[3]

Modern and contemporary art

[edit]
  • In 2016, the Blanton acquired ‘The City,’ a two-part work that includes a 30-foot painting of the Ku Klux Klan by Texan, Mexican-American artist Vincent Valdez. The museum exhibited the work in the summer of 2018.[4]
