Recognition of Xiphioidei

[edit]

@YorkshireExpat: Hi all, the current infobox gives the wrong impression of billfish being a paraphyletic group with respect to barracudas (in addition, all three fossil families are also explicitly referred to as billfish in most scientific papers I can find, and are considered to also be most closely related to extant billfish), whereas all sources (whether they give the order as Perciformes, Scombriformes, Istiophoriformes, or Carangiformes) seem to clearly consider them a monophyletic group. For this reason, I feel that the suborder Xiphioidei should be recognized for this page. Although WORMS has deprecated it, that appears to have just been a side effect of the recent move to the Carangiformes, and the fact remains that we otherwise don't have a proper scientific term for the billfish group as a whole. Xiphioidei has been recognized in scientific papers as recently as 2019 and this year. Geekgecko (talk) 17:52, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
