Should we reconsider a mention of ‘Townland of excrement’? The direct link to the Oxford University Press, A Dictionary of British Place Names, https://www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/acref/9780199609086.001.0001/acref-9780199609086-e-1033?result=1041, and published in 2011 (https://www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/acref/9780199609086.001.0001/acref-9780199609086) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:BB6:2829:7900:18AB:602E:D83:9C7C (talk) 07:49, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have once again removed the section on the theory that the name Ballyhack has etymology as the "Town of Excrement". This is not due to any objection to that assertion, it is due to the lack of reliable sources, one is a blogpost with no references to back up the assertion, one link is dead, and the third is a mirror site for Wikipedia. The only seemingly suitable reference is to the Oxford dictionary of British place names but provides no details for this book. Until such time as someone can present a verifiable source for this version of the etymology, it is not suitable for inclusion in the article. Smirkybec (talk) 13:46, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the link to the wikipedia, provided a direct link to Oxford Reference to British Place names. Over the Etymology is well cited (Oxford Reference) and Balanced. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dona seel (talkcontribs) 08:43, 23 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I could see you still referenced a mirror site, and that blog is not a suitable reference to use in this context. I have retained one sentence, as it is the only element supported by the Oxford source. To expand on that interpretation of the name you would really need far more robust references than the ones used up to this point. The fact that there is two Irish variants for the name, and that the town itself favours Baile Each in its signage casts further doubt on the relevance of placing any more emphasis on that proposed etymology.Smirkybec (talk) 21:05, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
