Bánh trôi nước
[edit]Is bánh trôi nước one that we should add to the list? Or is it the same (northern name) as che xoi nuoc? Badagnani (talk) 07:40, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Photo in lead
[edit]Image:Bánh bèo, bột lọc, nem chua.jpg is a good photo for the lead, as it shows several different ones. Good find. Badagnani (talk) 09:47, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
"Dumplings" and "Desserts"
[edit]Regarding the logic of the new headings: several of the dumplings in the "Dumplings" section are also sweet, and eaten as desserts. Badagnani (talk) 09:59, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
- As an Asian's stance, dumpling reminds of savory dishes with meat fillings like mandu (dumpling). I just roughly categorized the whole clotted entries into several headings of what I think suitable, so if you think the two are not adequately divided, feel free to merge them. However, I think Vietnamese editors' input on the change of the article would be needed.--Caspian blue (talk) 10:18, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
There are definitely sweet dumplings (the steamed bun, for example, can be filled with savory pork or sweet bean paste but both are dumplings). However, just changing the heading "Dumplings" to "Savory dumplings" would solve things. Otherwise, basically I think your recategorization was a good idea. Badagnani (talk) 01:16, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
- One problem on the categorization is like what would you relocate Bánh da lợn? It looks like tteok in the picture of Image:Korean beverage-Baesuk-01.jpg although ingredients are quite different from each other. Bánh da lợn looks not like a dumpling. By the way, if you can read Vietnamese, please add IPA to each items. Whenever I go to a Vietnamese restaurant (well almost pho-centered places), I could not even prononciate dishes on the menu.--Caspian blue (talk) 02:09, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
I don't think bánh da lợn is a dumpling; more of a jelly-like sweet cake. Badagnani (talk) 02:13, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Regarding pronunciation, Vietnamese is a can of worms. There are so many vowels and the consonants are numerous, and often don't match other languages. Also, northern and southern Vietnamese pronounce the same words in different ways. IPA symbols are not always well known to our readers, so maybe they could refer to the Vietnamese language article for how to pronounced Vietnamese consonants, vowels, diacritics, and tones. Wording
[edit]The wording: "In general, anything made from flour can be called bánh" seems clearer than the version just changed to. Badagnani (talk) 06:07, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
- But lots of foods made from rice are called banh. And rice is not consdered a flour as far as I'm aware. I don't think a sandwich is made from flour either. ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:47, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
- Bánh canh is a fish cake or bánh hỏi is bundle of noodles. So I think the generalized description works okay, although I'm open to it being tweaks. I think the sentence describing these dishes needs work. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:36, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
The wording doesn't work because it doesn't encompass all the things the term can be used for. Can you come up with a more accurate wording? The original wording was accurate. "...a variety of baked good and sandwiches eaten by hand" is just not correct because the term refers to other things than those. Badagnani (talk) 03:24, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, I tweaked it. See what you think. ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:02, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
Bánh bò
[edit]Can we remove bánh bò as an example of how Vietnamese add another word after bánh to define the cake? Because bánh bò does not mean "cow cake" according to the street bánh bò sellers in Vietnam. Sunnyrain90 (talk) 02:36, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
- Bánh bò now has reputable sources confirming that "cow cake" is one reasonable interpretation of the name. (I added "crawling cake" to cover another common explanation.) – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 09:19, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
Sino-Vietnamese Reading
[edit]By the way the Sino-Vietnamese reading of this character 餅 is bính, not bánh. Bánh is Thuần Việt whereas bính is Hán Việt.
The word bánh is of course related to the character 餅, but somebody needs to edit the article so that people won't misunderstand that bánh is the Sino-Vietnamese reading of 餅.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Sunnyrain90 (talk • contribs) 02:36, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
To add to article
[edit]To add to article: bánh ram ít, a glutinous rice cake from Hue. 173.89.236.187 (talk) 06:21, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Leaf for bánh nậm
[edit]Can't bánh nậm also be made with a Cordyline fruticosa (huyết dụ đỏ) leaf, called "ti leaf" in Hawaii? 204.210.190.132 (talk) 01:34, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
