Demographics

[edit]

This is another article about an Indian place where the rules of arithmetic seem not to be observed. If 57% of the males and 43% of females are literate then the average literacy rate cannot be 66%. This sort of nonsense is what ruins the reputation of an encyclopedia.--SilasW 12:11, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I've deleted the sentence pending verification. Thanks for the catch! Antorjal 12:17, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed it. Census info:"230 Arambag M West Bengal Hugli 56,129 28,748 27,381 6,464 3,334 3,130 36,972 20,991 15,981". The numbers indicate the following info: total population (56,129: male 28,748 and female 27,381), less than 6 years of age(6,464: male 3,334 and female 3,130), literates (36,972: male 20,991 and female 15,981). Current fixed statistics on literacy says: 66% literacy (36972/56129 = 65.86%), 73% male literacy (#literate_males/#males = 20991/28748 = 73.01%), 58% female literacy (#literate_females/#females = 15981/27381 = 58.36%).--GDibyendu (talk) 18:08, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
