first recording of the suites in a period intsrument?
[edit]Pau Casals recorded them in 1936-1939 with a Matteo Goffriller. Isn't that a period instrument? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.45.236.133 (talk) 12:15, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
"Period" instrument refers to an instrument in the disposition of the period. Casals's Gofriller had been built in the Baroque era but like nearly all old, precious instruments, modified to reflect later standards, and therefore no longer a period instrument. The neck would have been reset, the bass bar replaced with a more massive one, and an endpin added, among other things. Additionally, Casals was using a type of bow that was not invented until the very end of the eighteenth century, what is now known as a "modern" or Tourte bow. August Wenzinger did play baroque-period style cello—he taught viola da gamba & baroque cello at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis from 1933 onwards—and recorded the suites in about 1960, so perhaps his recording is the first on a period instrument, though at this point it's difficult to know exactly what set up he had on his cello at that time. --HenryPurcell (talk) 18:55, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
