Water ballast

[edit]

Paul, I saw your edit and comment regarding the water ballast. Do you have a reference that indicates that pumps were not used? I recall hearing some speculation about the water being added only by scooping, but that doesn't make sense to me. And I got a very close look at the boat when it came to Geneva, and the aft end has tubes that could well have been used to pump water from one float to the other. I realize that your edit is "possibly", so I have no problems with the edit. I'm just wondering whether there is a reliable source that explains more about how the ballast was used.--Gautier lebon (talk) 08:45, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The most direct proof came from a video that was circulating during the Cup match. It was taken dockside looking at A5 while some work was done on it and the engine was started. Brad Butterworth was answering questions from the press. He was asked if the engine was used to pump water ballast, and he said, no - it was only used for the winches. I don't remember the exact date, but it was probably between Feb 8 and Feb 11. Besides that, there are the pictures of the scoops and the video of the water draining out of the scoops during the match.--Paul (talk) 21:49, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, during the races, water could be seen coming out of what could be a scoop. But it could also be a valve that opened to release water and closed when under water. Butterworth's statement could be true, or it could be misinformation. Anyway, the text as it stands correctly reflects what we know and we will probably never know more.--Gautier lebon (talk) 06:50, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Beam dimension

[edit]

The article suggests that Alinghi 5's beam is 90-feet, but appends the "dubious" tag to it. The 90-foot dimension is the maximum beam and LOA allowed by the Deed of Gift challenge.Alinghi's website However, as with all sailboats, the longer the waterline, the faster the boat. With catamarans, it's advantageous (all other factors being the same) to go to the maximum on beam. However, for various reasons, Alinghi 5 stayed a bit inside of that. According to YachtPals (a respected sailing and sailboat racing journal), Alinghi 5 has a 23-meter/75-foot beam. For some idiotic reason, WP has blacklisted the YachtPals site, so I can't properly link to the relevant page, but if you go to their site and append /alinghi-americas-cup-9021 after the .com, it'll take you there. I don't know if that satisfies everyone's desire for a primary source but, lacking a beam dimension from a more official source, it's the best I can do.
