Spelling

[edit]

Aleš Hrdlička is an unreferenced spelling not surpported by any of the cited sources. Gene Nygaard 01:59, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The first reference in his list below is 1902 as Ales Hrdlicka. There does not appear to be any publications by him using any first name other than Ales. The first line of this wiki entry is incorrect.

Mexican Yaqui remains controversy

[edit]

This news item just came up about Hrdlicka's involvement in a dispute between the US & Mexican government for the remains of some Yaqui Indians massacred in the early 1900's. Apparently, Hrdlicka was the anthropologist responsible for the remains residing in New York until now and also contributed to the atrocities committed to the remains under the guise of studying that particular race[1]

this battle has been occurring for over two years now.

here is the AP story that ran in Yahoo! News: Mexico Indian remains returned from NY for burial

The spelling is correct. It is a Czech name, see http://cs.wiki.x.io/wiki/Aleš_Hrdlička. Aleš Hrdlička was a former director of the Smithsonian institute and the author of The Human Races essay, a breakthrough in that field of antropological studies. Further references & biography:

Settlement of the Americas

[edit]

In reading up on Vero Man, I have come across a number of sources which state that Mr. Hrdlicka was very set in his assumption that man did not settle the New World until 4,000 years ago. His use of contemporary but inapplicable techniques such as skull measurement resulted in his rejecting apparently valid claims that Vero Man was more than 10,000 years old. The effect of this was to relegate Vero Man into the broom closet of history.

Added to and edited "Life and Career"

[edit]

I revised and reformatted "Life and Career," adding in some information about his Peruvian expedition as well as expanded on the Kagamil Island subject. Also added a picture exemplifying his anthropometric photography methods. I invite others to provide me feedback or suggestions pertaining to the sections I edited or added. I've added multiple links to other Wikipedia articles in the sections that I've added to and edited, including the locations of Hrdlička's Peruvian expedition as well as the page for trephination. FruitXipe (talk) 19:22, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
