Merge proposal

[edit]

الرشيد (talk · contribs) and I propose to merge the following variants (all are transliterations of the same name هاشمي, referring to the important Banū Hāshim clan, see also Hashemites (disambiguation)):

It can be argued that the first two are afghan while the last three are Persian, but I would merge them all into one, since they're easy to mix (for example the Hashmi article currently lists kings of Jordan). Two questions:

  1. Where should we merge them, into al-Hashimi (surname)? (Currently al-Hashimi itself refers to a specific scholar, perhaps it should be moved).
  2. I'm not completely sure about Arabic name#Dynastic or family name, can someone tell me if some of these al-Hashimi (with a definite article 'the') should actually be Al Hashimi (long A in Arabic) or Ahl Hashimi?

Tokenzero (talk · contribs) For your questions, I think it is good to merge them into al-Hashimi (surname); because it is clear and sounds like other Arabic names. Also, for the Persian name (without the definite article), I think we can made them like redirects to the main title, as well as it is not a must for the arabic surnames to have definite articles (but most of Arabs who come originally from Arabic tribs or clans have it in their surnames if it represent the name of the trib .
For the second question, no they should not; they could be Al Hashimi (definite article) or Hashimi which is less in use in Arabic language.
Also, it will be clear for readers if the page the Hashmi being moved to a title like list of kings (Jordan) or kings of Jordan. الرشيد (talk) 18:00, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I'd wait a few more days before carrying out the merge, in case someone else wants to comment. But if you want you could start creating the merged article at Draft:Al-Hashimi (surname) Tokenzero (talk) 11:56, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Merge done. I have also moved the contents of Al Hashimi to Ali ibn Sulayman al-Hashimi and redirected Al Hashimi to here instead. Tokenzero (talk) 12:41, 15 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
