[edit]

The Akosombo Dam is located in the Akuamukland in the eastern part of Ghana. The name Akosombo was derived from the Akan word “Nkonson-konso bo” meaning chain of rocks. The town is a beautiful place. One thing you will notice is that the town is surrounded by mountains that are formed in a chain of rocks. Visitors have to go through the Dam’s main office and request for a tour inside the Dam. The office is not close to the Dam. Every visitor is expected to pick up a pass and pay an amount of money before being taken for the tour. A tour guy will then join you and take you up the hill where the dam is located.

Upon reaching there, one have to go through a final security check to make sure no one has anything that can harm the Dam. Your tour starts at the switch yard, and this is the place is where all the switches are, there are two switches which serves two purposes. One is the switch for lightening around the Dam and the other is to power the generators through cables for distribution of electricity throughout the whole country.

The next place is the control room where one will be welcomed by the engineers, and another person will take it from there and explain how their daily activities go. They will then show a board which has a lot of flashing lights in different colors and this is called the “Giant board”, this is what signals their activities. After this you will be taken to the top of the Dam where there are big red penstocks which looks like pipe line but in a big sizes. The purpose of this penstocks carries the water at a high speed and very steep gradient so that it can turn the turbines to produce electricity. Upon completion of the tour another engineer will then be take the visitors to the Saint Barbra Monuments where about 30 million people died when there was a flood in construction of the Dam. Also the Volta Lake which is one of the biggest man-made lakes in the world, the Marine “in land port” where one can purchase some sea foods. There are some good restaurants that serves good food too just in case one wants to grab something to eat after a long walk.
