Discrepancy

[edit]

"On 2 June 1846, Judson married for the third time, to writer Emily Chubbuck who he had commissioned to write memoirs for Sarah Hall Boardman. They had a daughter born in 1847.

Judson lived for fifteen more years of work in and for Burma."

And yet he died in 1850. Yopienso (talk) 22:17, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Luther Rice sailed a little after Judson on February 6, 1812 on the ship named "The Harmony." He sailed together with Hall. They arrived August 8th in Calcutta and were reunited with Judson at that point. For this see "Dispensations of Providence: The Journal and Selected Letters of Luther Rice" New York: The American Baptist Historical Society, 1984, pxiii. 75.81.13.23 (talk) 17:45, 15 December 2010 (UTC)rcamazed[reply]

Cleanup requested

[edit]

The English of this article has some atrocious grammar and syntax. Additionally, the article seems to be filled with POV ("his work was perfect") and questionable facts ("he translated the Bible from Hebrew" [the Christian Bible's original is written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, so unless he translated 90% of the "Old Testament", and that's all, this statement is incomplete at best]). Tomertalk 22:59, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaned up (IMHO). Reworded the most arguably outrageous statements and checked the facts against web and books. He is reported to have translated the whole Bible into Burmese - the comment on the source language has already been deleted. Welsh 20:22, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Probably the original author's point was that Judson had translated from the original languages into Burmese and not from English into Burmese. Angr (talkcontribs) 10:15, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Significant Source

[edit]

Christian History & Biography, Issue 90, Spring 2006 is primarily focused on him and his missionary activity. It also has a list of recommended secondary sources. I'll be expanding extensively over the next few days. GRBerry 18:06, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent! Maybe you can find out which flavor of Baptist he was, too. Angr (talk) 18:40, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, he converted aboard ship while en route to his mission. This conversion meant a loss of financial support from the Congregationalist organization that had sponsored him. The resultant need for funds led to the first Baptist association in the U.S.. It is more accurate to say that there are U.S. Baptist associations because of Judson than that he belonged to any of them! His strongest Bpatist influences would probably be William Carey and Brown University, which was a Baptist institution by the name of Rhode Island College when he attended it. GRBerry 21:27, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, here is the list of Judson biographies that the magazine recommends:

  • Blumberg, Joan Jacobs (1980). Mission for Life: The story of the family of Adoniram Judson, the dramatic events of the first American foreign mission, and the course of evangelical religion in the nineteenth century. Free Press.
  • Hunt, Rosalie Hall (2005). Bless God and Take Courage: The Judson History and Legacy. Judson Press.
  • Judson, Edward P. (1883). The Life of Adoniram Judson. American Baptist Publication Society.
  • Warburton, Stacy R. (1937). Westward! The Story of Adoniram Judson. Round Table Press.
  • Wayland, Francis (1853). A Memoir of the Life and Labors of the Rev. Adoniram Judson. Phillipos, Sampson & Co.
  • Knowles, James D. (1831). Memoir of Mrs. Ann H. Judson. Boston: Lincoln & Edmands., reprinted in facsimile form in the series Ed. Caroly De Swarte Gifford, ed. (1987). Women in American Protestant Religion 1800-1930. Garland Pub., Inc.

Neutral Point of View Policy

[edit]

"This article reads more like a story than an encyclopedia entry. To meet Wikipedia's quality standards and conform with our Neutral Point of View policy, please help to introduce a more formal style and remove any personally invested tone. (June 2010)"

It would seem that wikipedia will have a difficult time having anything that is not just secular humanistic point of view. When wanting to have history on any type of Christian Missionary or Churches Wiki wants to be neutral and leave the thread open for modification. but for Jewish or Islamic religions the forums have been locked to additions without special permission and review.

Should not the policy of Neutral Point of View Policy apply to all religions equally?

for the moment this policy seems only applicable to Christian and in some cases new age point of view but not to Judaism and Islam.

Not so neutral after all, more like PC and playing to special groups differently than with others. That is biased and prejudice.

"first missionary"

[edit]

for purposes of neutrality I have added the word "Protestant" as there were Catholic missionaries before this. --Richardson mcphillips (talk) 17:11, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
