Unnecessary information
[edit]Is mentioning when Wendy transitioned really necessary? The article gains nothing by divulging this personal information of hers. Blackenedbutterfly (talk) 01:21, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
- Well, if it's not mentioned, then the question of why the album title uses "Walter" never gets answered in the article. Double sharp (talk) 01:59, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
Previous name
[edit]The cover image uses her birth name, we should include it in the article to avoid confusing the reader. Thoughts? 82.132.215.94 (talk) 09:30, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
It's not policy. We don't include mentions of Caitlyn Jenner's assigned name for every mention of her on every article not purely about her that discusses her before she came out. The reason for the name being different is already explained here without saying what her assigned name was. Stephanie921 (talk) 09:34, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
- What is not policy, Stephanie921? MOS:GENDERID states that the birth name should be mentioned in this context. 82.132.215.94 (talk) 09:40, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
- I don't think it does. Because it says: "Outside the main biographical article, generally do not discuss in detail changes of a person's name [presentation] or gender presentation unless pertinent" and "paraphrase, elide, or use square brackets to replace portions of quotations to avoid deadnaming or misgendering, except in rare cases where exact wording cannot be avoided". In the vein of the second sentence, I have written the article to not say her assigned name whilst conveying the necessary information. There's no need to state her assigned name, and it is not pertinent to do so since the fact that she was assigned male at birth is written. The article says she is a trans woman, that it was released under her assigned name, and that when she transitioned the album was corrected to say her actual name. Nowhere does the MOS you linked say her assigned name should be mentioned here. And like I said, it even says it shouldn't be, as it states assigned names should generally not be used outside of the articles of the person in question, which this is not.
- The MOS says:
- "A living transgender or non-binary person's former name should be included in the lead sentence of their main biographical article only if they were notable under it". I personally don't think assigned names should be included at all - but either way this is only instance of that MOS which says assigned names should be mentioned for notable people - and it only applies to main biographical articles (in this case Wendy Carlos' page, not this article). Stephanie921 (talk) 09:56, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Stephanie921: "If they were notable under the name by which they were credited for the work or other activity, provide it in a parenthetical or footnote on first reference; add more parentheticals or footnotes only if needed to avoid confusion." from MOS:GENDERID. 82.132.215.149 (talk) 20:05, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
- That's the way it's formatted now, I see no reason to change it. All relevant info is conveyed without specifying her assigned name, and either way it's already in the title. It is fine Stephanie921 (talk) 01:52, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

- @User:Blackenedbutterfly has posted before saying talking about her transition is unnecessary. I think that mentioning her assigned name (at all, but even more so again since it's already in the title) is unneeded - but mentioning that she's trans is relevant to explain the title and the reason for the album's reissuing. This can be done - as evidenced by my rewording in the article - without mentioning Wendy's assigned name again Stephanie921 (talk) 19:18, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
