Henry W. Wheeler, a Captain with the 2nd Maine was a Civil War Medal of honor winner. I am the new owner of his Civil war handwritten diary, which dates from 1861-1866. I am unable to find much out about him. Any suggestions?108.64.173.203 (talk) 01:02, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
- To start, I'd suggest tracking down some books about the 2nd Maine to see if he's mentioned in any of them. This article mentions James H. Mundy's, Second to None: The Story of the Second Maine Volunteers and it looks like there was also a book published in 1960 by Raymond Webb called The Second Maine : the history of a Civil War regiment. If those don't pan out, I'd contact local history societies to see if they have more information or suggestions. Katya (talk) 14:45, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
A hole in the narrative
[edit]Why was this unit disbanded before the end of the war? And why is it, as the article puts it, that "survivors who had enlisted for three, rather than two, years were transferred to the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment under protest."? (The reference on that line goes nowhere.) I came here looking to fill a similar hole in another source, which reported the same grudging integration into the 20th and refers to "the rebellious 2nd Maine". However, like this article, it stops short of actually explaining any of this. Could someone who knows the answer add that information to the article? Laodah 22:19, 20 July 2016 (UTC)
- It was disbanded because the majority of it was only enlisted for two years and this time was up. Only a few regiments were able to re-enlist enough soldiers to continue their service and get the designation of veteran infantry. Some had enlisted for 3 years of service and, as they were far too few for a regiment, needed to be transferred to another unit. The protesters probably didn´t read the small print in their enlistment form or the regulations. As for the article I think in that sentence already it is made pretty clear that they still needed to serve a year ...GELongstreet (talk) 12:33, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
