Expanded article, added references & removed "article needs additional citations for verification" template

[edit]

Over the last few weeks I have progressively expanded the article, plus added additional references. I have therefore removed the improvement template, as I believe the article now contains sufficient references. I have also added the Project sailing template to this talk page

If I find the time I will probably expanded the CYCA report section. However if anyone else has the time feel free to carry this out.Ilenart626 (talk) 10:38, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

unclear point

[edit]

When you write "Of the 115 boats which started, 71 retired and 43 yachts completed the race", you are apparently counting sunk boats as retired boats. 71+43=114; so what is the state of the one boat missing here, a boat neither retired nor having completed the race? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.183.81.152 (talk) 11:53, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • 43 is the number that The Proving Ground quotes (p266). However the Sydney to Hobart website states Of the 115 boats which started, 71 retired, 44 finishing.... As this one adds up will go with this reference Ilenart626 (talk) 13:13, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Winner?

[edit]

The "winner" as listed on this page, is Sayonara. However, the winner of the Sydney-Hobart is considered to be the handicap winner, rather than the first boat in. It can be the same boat, as Wild Oats XI was in 2005, but it is usually a different boat. In 1998, the winner was AFR Midnight Rambler. Flanker235 (talk) 03:59, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

if you look at all the other Sydney to Hobart race pages they all show thr "winner" as the line honours winner, not the handicap winner Ilenart626 (talk) 13:28, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, they are wrong. Line Honours is only available to a very small number of boats. IMS is the premier handicap category and all the most competitive boats enter in that. It is that section where the race is decided.
"The Tattersall Cup for the overall winner is the most significant and historic perpetual trophy awarded in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race."

Edits relating to Rob Mundle's book Fatal Storm

[edit]

Note: discussion transferred from | talk:Ilenart626

Hi @Ilenart626:, regarding your revert to my addition of Rob Mundle's book Fatal Storm: the second sentence is a statement cited from the book. Obviously the page is deficient without including a clear reference to Fatal Storm, which is the definitive, detailed account of that race. If you object to where I put it, could you please suggest where better it should appear? Cheers Cabrils (talk) 11:01, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

  • Hi Cabrils, this statement is already referenced to Rob Mundle’s book Fatal Storm, refer the 2nd reference inder “References” at the end of the article. Rob’s book is also referenced to the 7th, 9th, 12th, 13th and 14th references, so I would say there are plenty of references to Fatal Storm. Ilenart626 (talk) 15:28, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
    • Hi Ilenart, yes I'm aware of those references (I mentioned the first in my message above). The point I'm making is that firstly, the average reader they may not be aware to look in the references; and secondly and more importantly, Mundle's book is the definitive resource of the event. It's like a page 'the landing of the moon' not including a reference, in the text, to the footage of Neil Armstrong stepping off the ladder. In an effort to be conciliatory I have added a reference in the 'See Also' section towards the bottom of the page, even though it really doesn't belong in there as the other items are tangential to that actual race, not reports about it, so rightly it should be up higher on the page. I may revisit this. Cabrils (talk) 23:03, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
    • Hi Cabrilis. Couple of points:
  1. “...the average reader they may not be aware to look in the references”. I understand Wiki rules are clear on referencing and what should be included in the Introduction. I believe your original addition to the Introduction “The event is the subject of Rob Mundle's best-selling 1999 book Fatal Storm: The 54th Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.” sounds to much like promotion of the book.
  2. I am nnot sure I agree with “... Mundle's book is the definitive resource of the event.”. My understanding is that it was the first one published so yes it was the most popular. I personally found it a bit sensational. In any event you would need to provide an independent reference to support this assertion, ie not the author or publisher stating this.

With regard to you latest edit in the “See also” section, my understanding is that this section is used to highlight Wiki articles that relate to the 1988 Sydney to Hobart. Would suggest a reference to Rob Mundle article would be more appropriate.

I have trannsferred our discussion to the 1998 Sydney to Hobart talk page so other editors can contribute to this discussion Ilenart626 (talk) 10:06, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

White hull

[edit]

According to a TV program, the storm produced waves with towering white froth. This made it hard to see an overturned yacht with a white hull. It is suggested that hulls should be painted in a light bright colour. ----MountVic127 (talk) 00:04, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
