NBA first overall draft pick lists the first overall pick of this draft as Howie Shannon. Zagalejo 05:21, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Howie Shannon was really the number 1 pick in this draft, there is a reference now, too. --Crzycheetah 05:18, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, thanks for looking into that! Zagalejo 05:21, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Howie Shannon

[edit]

Howie Shannon is listed as being drafted in 1949, but it looks like he was already playing for Providence Steamrollers in 1948–49. I did find this at a discussion board at apbr.org, "In regards to Harry Gallatin, I found a 22Mar49 article in the Frederick (MD) News Post which states that Gallatin, Howie Shannon and George Kaftan were drafted by New York, Providence and Boston as part of an agreement that they could be signed during the 1948-49 season prior to the 1949 draft." Would anyone have access to the Frederick News Post mentioned or find any other reliable sources that can be added to the article? —Bagumba (talk) 07:05, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is interesting, but I haven't been able to found anything yet. Anyway there is a further discussion about Gallatin, Kaftan and Shannon on apbr.org that is relevant to this issue. — MT (talk) 08:43, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I left a message at the Maryland Wiki project. The idea of a prior agreement makes sense. Shannon definitely was playing in the 1948-49 season; there's no doubt about that. Zagalejo^^^ 01:39, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This article could be the answer to the problem, but it's pay-per-view article. — MT (talk) 17:55, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The third reply here has some interesting info. Zagalejo^^^ 03:14, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As I dont have access to the actual ref, I wont add to the article myself.—Bagumba (talk) 03:36, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I think it's resolved with this edit. Seems he was ruled ineligible for college in 1948–49, played with Providence that season, but the BAA forced the team to draft him the following year to secure his rights.—Bagumba (talk) 13:20, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nice digging into the contemporaneous news articles – this conclusion looks sound. — Myasuda (talk) 14:22, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
