300 Savage as Parent for 308
[edit]There is a categorically false statement on both this page and the page for the 308 Winchester. The 300 Savage is not and cannot be the parent case for the 308 Winchester, as the 308 case is longer. The definition of a parent case means "formed from" or "made from". The 300 Savage cannot be lengthened to form a 308 case, therefore it is not the parent. The parent of both the 300 Savage and the 308 is the 30-06 Springfield. The Savage was formed from the 30-06 case in order to create a shorter and lower pressure round for intermediate performance on game. It was never intended for or used in combat. The 308 was created by cutting the 30-06 case off at the case to shoulder junction and forming a new shoulder and neck with forming dies. This was a military creation, not civilian. Winchester was granted permission from DoD to put their name on the cartridge, but it was first created for combat by the DoD in collaboration with Winchester. Please correct this information on both this page and the 308 page. It is actually pretty embarrassing to the entire firearms community that both of these pages contain information that is physically impossible, and well known to anyone who has done any sort of homework on the subject. 75.220.188.19 (talk) 12:07, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
- Then I guess Chuck Hawks hasn't done his homework since the reference points to him. But then, what does he know about weapons and ammo? Thomas.W (talk) 16:32, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
Chuck Hawks alludes to the 300 Savage influencing development of the 308, he does not claim that the Savage is the parent case. There's a huge difference between the two. He gives credit to the reader for basic deductive reasoning. Can a child come from a person who doesn't have the same genes? The 300 Savage cannot, under any circumstances, no matter who argues otherwise, physically be the parent for the 308 Winchester. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.220.161.111 (talk) 22:13, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
