Siren's Curse at RCDB

Siren's Curse is an upcoming steel roller coaster at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. Manufactured by Vekoma, the ride is set to open in 2025.[1][2] The ride is planned to be 2,966 feet (904 m) long with a maximum height of 160 feet (49 m), a 90-degree drop, and two inversions.[3]

History

[edit]

Origins

[edit]

Vekoma had first introduced the Tilt Coaster in 2002 with Gravity Max at Lihpao Land in Taichung, Taiwan, using a seesaw track to tilt the train at a 90° angle before releasing it into the drop. The concept failed to take off with potential customers and Vekoma subsequently shelved the product. Development on a second-generation model resumed in the 2010's after their technology had advanced, and particularly after Chinese competitor Golden Horse's recent success in producing their own Tilt Coasters.[4] A prototype module of the Tilt Track was set up in September 2021 at Vekoma's factory in Vlodrop, The Netherlands. It was operational between May 2022 and 2023 before being dismantled for use on a full coaster installation; much of the coaster's lift hill and drop were additionally fabricated at this time.[5]

The installation in question was first intended for Energylandia in Zator, Poland, who had by that time procured close to a dozen different attractions from Vekoma and its related companies. The project was formally announced in February 2022 at a cost of PLN50,650,000zł (USD$13.2 million), with PLN19,998,300zł to be financed by the European Union.[6] However, Energylandia failed to move forwards with the attraction and terminated the contract in October 2023.[7][better source needed] Vekoma kept the project in reserve; then-Six Flags management had meanwhile been procuring other partially-produced roller coasters from the company (such as The Flash: Vertical Velocity at Six Flags Great Adventure).[8]

Six Flags México first imported the already-manufactured track pieces in June 2024.[9] The following month, the park announced a public consultation for the construction of "Roller Coaster Type A", with work intended to take place over the course of ten months.[10] The coaster would have replaced the Aquaman SplashDown Shoot the chute water ride and other surrounding infrastructure. Planned tree removals drew ire from the Mexico City government, who refused to endorse any attraction plans involving such; Six Flags issued a statement on July 16 that they'd found an alternative placement.[11][12] Corporate had meanwhile during that month completed a merger with Cedar Fair, placing México and Cedar Point under the same Six Flags roster.[13] Cedar Point has previously launched a survey in April 2024 deliberating a Tilt Coaster for the long term.[14]

Announcement

[edit]

Cedar Point first referenced their announcement on September 13, simply stating that "Something Is Surfacing".[15] Siren's Curse was formally revealed on September 19, 2024 as North America's tallest, fastest, and longest tilt coaster.[1] The announcement came as a surprise to fans and industry veterans alike, given the lack of preparation and timing of the release.[16] Speculation ensued that the coaster was a last-minute addition, rescuing the project from continued permitting issues in Mexico in order to compensate for Top Thrill 2, which had been crippled by technical issues during its inaugural 2024 season and couldn't complete modifications until 2025.[17][18] Siren's Curse will reuse the former Cedar Dorms site, necessitating the rerouting of Perimeter Road and expanding the park's footprint; an early Summer 2025 opening is promised.[17]
