Patrocles (Ancient Greek: Πατροκλῆς) was an Athenian of the Classical period, known chiefly for being the half‐brother of the philosopher Socrates[1]. Although few details of his life have survived in the historical record, he is attested as a member of the family of Phaenarete, Socrates’ mother, and is occasionally mentioned in ancient sources discussing Socratic biography and Athenian family life.
Biography
[edit]Patrocles was born in Athens during the 5th century BC. He was the son of Phaenarete, a midwife of some renown in Athens, and Chaeredemus, her second husband[2]. Phaenarete, who is best known as the mother of Socrates, had Patrocles after the death of her first husband, Sophroniscus. As a result, Patrocles was the half‐brother of Socrates.
