Palianytsia (Ukrainian: Паляниця, [pɐlʲɐˈnɪt͡sʲɐ]) is a Ukrainian rocket drone missile system developed by Ukraine during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Naming
[edit]The name Palianytsia is a shibboleth that has been used to unmask foreign agents in Ukraine's armed forces, who are usually unable to pronounce the word correctly.[2][3]
Description
[edit]The "missile-drone" was described by Ukrainian President Zelenskyy as "a new class of weaponry" that is difficult to counter.[4][5]
The missile features a central body with forward-positioned wings and a tail section equipped with four control surfaces.[1]
Production
[edit]On August 24, 2024, following a strike on an ammunition depot in Voronezh Oblast, Ukrainian authorities officially announced the launch of the missile system, although they did not confirm its usage in that specific attack.[6] On September 6 2024, Alexander Kamyshin stated to The Kyiv Independent that Lithuania had contributed around 11 million USD to build Palianytsia systems.[7]
