North by Northwestern is a daily online news magazine at Northwestern University, started in September 2006 by students at the Medill School of Journalism. It is noted for its multimedia coverage of campus events.[citation needed] In 2008, the site was recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists with eight regional Mark of Excellence Awards, one more than in 2007. It also won a national Mark of Excellence finalist for best independent Web site, and was a winner of the 2008 National Pacemaker Awards, considered the "Pulitzer Prize" of college journalism.[1] The Society of Professional Journalists awarded NBN the national Mark of Excellence award for best independent online student publication in 2010.

In the spring of 2008, the site launched a quarterly print magazine of the same name.[2]
