Nickel West is a division of BHP that operates its nickel operations in Western Australia which includes Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, Kambalda Nickel Operations, Kwinana Nickel Refinery, Leinster Nickel Mine and Mount Keith Nickel Mine.[1] It was founded in 2005 by BHP after it acquired WMC Resources.[2]

In August 2021, Nickel West announced it planned to diversify into wind farms.[3]

Due to an oversupply of nickel and a consequent drop in nickel prices, BHP announced in July 2024 that it would temporarily close all of its Nickel West operations in October 2024 and place them in care and maintenance.[4] This decision is scheduled to be reviewed in February 2027.[5]
