Memed Gunawan (born 15 February 1948) is an Indonesian researcher and author.

Early life and education

Gunawan was born on 15 February 1948 in Kuningan, West Java.[1] He attended the Faculty of Agriculture at IPB University, majoring in agricultural statistics in 1974, and earned his Ph.D. in agricultural and applied economics from the University of Minnesota in 1988.[1]

Personal life

Gunawan is married to Sylvia Muthalib, a physician, and they have two children, Ryaldi Pratama and Bayu Madendra.[1] They also have five grandchildren: Alyssa, Radya, Myiesha, Nana, and Zieven.[1]

Career

Gunawan began his career as a writer while serving as a magazine manager during his time as a student at IPB University, where he also wrote several short stories in Sundanese and Mangle.[1] Since 1975, he worked as a researcher at the Agricultural Socioeconomic Research Center, Research and Development Agency, and the Department of Agriculture.[1] In 1989, he moved to various offices, including the Planning Bureau at the Department of Agriculture, the Office of the Coordinating Minister for Industry and Trade, and the Agribusiness Agency.[1] From 2001 to 2005, Gunawan was appointed Secretary General of the Department of Agriculture.[1][2] He later served as the Food and Agriculture Organizer at the United Nations representative offices in Pakistan and Lesotho from December 2007 until 2009.[1]

Gunawan has also published two collections of poetry, titled Ladang Berselimut Kabut and Setangkai Padi Seisi Negeri (both in 2004), as well as Perjalanan Nurani ke Tanah Merdeka (2012).[1] He later authored several novels, including Kaktus Berbunga and Jalan Prahara (both in 2009), followed by Catatan Paimin: Manusia-Manusia Yang Terlupakan, Debat Kusir Para Birokrat, Garuda Berduka: Kisah Manusia Resah, and Ilalang Di Tanah Afrika (all in 2010).[1] In 2011, Gunawan published six more novels, including Hujan Putih di Serambi Cinta, Bong: Anak-Anak Langit, Menantang Takdir: Perempuan Pencari Cinta, Namaku NIO, Mengelas Cinta di Bengkel Tua, and Buih Rindu dari Saudi.[1]
