Mary Malone (actress)
Mary Malone is an English actress of stage and screen. She has appeared in several television series since 2022, and in the Dr Who 2023 Christmas special "The Church on Ruby Road". She is especially known for her role as Aqua in the 2025 series Missing You. She is a transgender woman.
Early life and education
[edit]Malone was born in Suffolk, England.[1]
She later described herself as "a bit of an outcast kid", who spent a lot of time online gaming, finding friends there. At school, she played Gregor the insect in a stage production of Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, and found that she enjoyed acting.[1]
After finishing high school, she attended drama school, and then a theatre-making course. In her graduation year, she played minor roles in the television drama series The Girlfriend Experience (2016) and Sky Arts' A Play in a Day.[1][2]
She graduated from the University of Essex in 2020.[2]
Career
[edit]After completing her training courses, Malone had stage roles in Abigail Thorn's show The Prince at the Southwark Playhouse, and in Josie Rourke's production of As You Like It at @sohoplace[1] in 2022. Malone played Phoebe, in a cast led by Leah Harvey and Rose Aylíng-Ellis, and also including Malone's sister Allie Daniel.[3]
In 2022, she appeared in the long-running British crime drama series Vera,[1][2] and in the TV comedy drama series Chivalry.[2]
On 25 December 2023, Malone appeared as Trudy, a friend of Ruby, in the Dr Who Christmas special, an episode entitled "The Church on Ruby Road".[1][2]
Malone appeared in the first British production of Australian creator's Yve Blake musical Fangirls in August 2024, and her face appeared on the posters advertising the show. She played the character Jules, whom she described as a mean girl and "iconic bitch".[1]
In 2025 she plays yoga teacher Aqua in the Harlan Coben TV adaptation of Missing You[1][2] – her first major role.[4]
She has also appeared in short films.[2]
Recognition and awards
[edit]In January 2023 Malone won Best Supporting Performer in a New Production of a Play in the BroadwayWorld UK / West End Awards, for her role in The Prince.[5]
Personal life
[edit]Malone is a transgender woman, who came out and transitioned sometime during or after her late teens. In 2024, while in her twenties, she said she was obsessed with Real Housewives.[1]
She is also a skilled artist, singer, puppeteer, pianist, and writer.[2][4][6]
She has a sister, Allie Daniel,[6] also an actress. They both appeared in Josie Bourke's 2022 production of As You Like It.[3]
