Makoto Yamashita (山下真, Yamashita Makoto) is a Japanese politician and the current governor of Nara Prefecture in Japan.

Early life and career

He was born in Yamanashi Prefecture. He graduated at the school of humanities at University of Tokyo and the school of law at the University of Kyoto.[1] He worked as a journalist and lawyer.[2]

Political career

Mayor of Ikoma (2006–2015)

He becomes the mayor in 2006 local election in Ikoma, Nara after gathering 27,540 votes. He run for another reelection for a second term in 2010 after gathering 26,997 votes. He won again in 2014 for his last and final term as mayor.[3][4]

2015 Nara Prefectural gubernatorial election

He announce in a press conference in 2015 that he is planning for running as the governor of Nara Prefecture in 2015 Nara Prefectural Gubernatorial Election.[5] He resign as the mayor of Ikoma in February 26.[6] He lost the election against Shōgo Arai.[7]

2017 Nara city mayoral election

He run as the city mayor of Nara city in 2017. He lose by a narrow margin against Gen Nakagawa.[8] However, he filed a petition requesting a recount on February 26, 2018, claiming that he was dissatisfied with the validity of the election, but Nara City Election Commission rejected his request. He later filed a lawsuit in the Osaka High Court.[9][10] But the court dismiss the case.[11]

Governor of Nara (2023 – present)

In 2023, secretary-general of the Japan Restoration Party (Nihon Ishi) in Nara, Morimoto Naoyuki endores Yamashita as the as the party's official candidate for the gubernatorial election in Nara.[1]

He won the election after beating the Liberal Democratic Party's candidate Sho Hiraki. he was the first candidate of the Japan Restoration Party outside of Osaka to won the gubernatorial election.[3]
