Biography

[edit]

Louis Sankalé grew up in Dakar. He studied at HEC Paris, where he obtained a diploma in business administration, as well as theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and Islamic studies at the Pontifical Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies in Rome. He was ordained a priest on September 18, 1976.[1]

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Cayenne on June 27, 1998. The Archbishop of Marseille, Bernard Panafieu, ordained him episcopal on September 27 of the same year; co-consecrators were Maurice Marie-Sainte, Archbishop of Fort-de-France and Saint Pierre, and Ernest Cabo, Bishop of Basse-Terre. He chose Et exaltavit humiles (in English "and exalt the lowly") as his motto, a sentence from the Magnificat (Luke 1:52).[2]

On June 18, 2004, he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Nice and inaugurated into office on September 5 of the same year. After Jean Bonfils' SMA retired, he succeeded him as bishop of Nice on March 28, 2005.[3]

Pope Francis accepted his resignation on August 8, 2013, for health reasons.[4]
