Her career began in 1995 with the film Boys on the Side directed by Herbert Ross, after which she would star in the Oscar-nominated film Selma, directed by Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernay, who also chose her for the role of Marion Wilkerson, Isabel's cousin Wilkerson in the movie Origin.
On television she became famous for playing the role of Congresswoman Raineesha Williams and T.T in the sitcom Reno911 from 2003 to 2009. From 2003 to 2010, she hosted a lifestyle program called Clean House that was nominated for four Daytime Emmy Awards, winning one.
From 2012 to 2016 she also took part in the TV series The Soul Man.
From 2018 to 2022 she takes part in the TV series Claws.
In 2019 she played Delores Wise in the miniseries When They See Us, for which she was nominated for an Emmy Awards.
Between 2022 and 2023 she starred in 2 episodes of the ABC TV series The Rookie, after which she was chosen as the protagonist of the spin-off entitled The Rookie: Feds, where she plays special agent Simone Clark.
