"Laika Party" is a song recorded by Norwegian singer-songwriter Emmy, and written by herself, Erlend Guttulsrud Kristiansen, Larissa Tormey, Truls Marius Aarra and Henrik Østlund, with production handled by Østlund and Jonas Jensen. The song was released on 20 January 2025 and will represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.

Background and composition

[edit]

Laika Party was written and composed by Emmy Kristine Guttulsrud Kristiansen, Erlend Guttulsrud Kristiansen, Larissa Tormey, Truls Marius Aarra and Henrik Østlund, the latter also responsible for the production together with Jonas Jensen.[1] The song was written at the Rena Song Fest songwriting camp in Norway, where Emmy met Tormey.[2] The song is a tribute to Laika, the dog who in 1957 became the first living being to orbit the Earth. The idea for the lyrics came after Emmy accidentally discovered her tragic story, prompting her to imagine an alternative fate in which the animal, instead of dying, experiences an endless party in space.[3]

Eurovision Song Contest 2025

[edit]

Eurosong 2025

[edit]

Eurosong 2025 was the national final format developed by RTÉ in order to select its entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. It was held on 7 February 2025, once again during a special edition of The Late Late Show, broadcast on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.[4][5] The final of Eurosong 2025 took place at the RTÉ Television Centre on 7 February 2025. The results were determined by a combination of votes from a national jury, an international jury and a televote – each awarding sets of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 points – with the latter taking precedence in the event of a tie in the first place.[6]

After initially being rejected from the Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix,[7] the "Laika Party" received a second chance on 23 January 2025, when it was announced as an entry for Eurosong, Ireland's selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.[8][9] At the national final, the song won both the national jury voting and the televote, earning the right to represent Ireland.[10]

At Eurovision

[edit]

The Eurovision Song Contest 2025 will take place at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, and will consist of two semi-finals to be held on the respective dates of 13 and 15 May and the final on 17 May 2025.[11] During the allocation draw held on 28 January 2025, Ireland was drawn to compete in the second semi-final, performing in the first half of the show.[12]
