Iganmode Grammar School

Iganmode Grammar School is a secondary school in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria[1] that was established in 1960.[2]

Brief History

Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, the pioneer Secondary School in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government of Ogun State and a foremost Secondary School in Nigeria was founded on 25th of January, 1960.

The founding of the school was premised on the need to provide sound secondary education for the indigenous citizens especially. It was also hinged on the preparation of same for higher education.

The school took off at a temporary site in Sango-Ota with 30 boys and 3 teachers with Mr. M. A. Adebulugbe as its Pioneer Principal.

In 1961, the school moved to its permanent site with expansion in scope and curriculum. Consequently, girls were later admitted in 1970.

Chief R.A. Dehinde took over as second principal between 31st May, 1966 and 31st March, 1971. Mr. Odesola T.O. was the Principal between 1st April. 1971 and 1st September, 1971. He was succeeded by Mr. J. A. Aina who administered between 1st September, 1971 and 1st September, 1975 before Mr. Mosaku J. S. resumed on the 2nd of September, 1976 and left 28th October, 1982.

Chief Cornelius Olaore Ogunseye’s administration spanned between 29th  October, 1982 and 31st  December, 1994 before Alhaji Ahmed Babasanya stepped in as Principal on 1st January, 1995 and retired voluntarily on 31st  of December, 2004 while Alhaji Bashiru Adisa Alagbe reported on the 5th January, 2005 as Principal of the school.

The school continued as a unit until September, 2005 when it was disarticulated in line with the State Government policy of crating Junior and Senior School categories.

With this, Alhaji B. A. Alagbe remained as the Administrative Head of the Senior School.

On retirement in April 2008, he was succeeded by Alhaji Nafiudeen O. Akinbo who later retired statutorily in 2012. The mantle of leadership changed with Prince Joseph Keke Obalanlege sitting in the saddle from 17th September, 2012 till 16th May, 2014 when he statutorily retired.

Deacon Olalekan Akinosi immediately took over as Principal of the school on the 16th of May, 2014 and on the attainment of 60 years of age, statutorily retired on 27th of May, 2019. His retirement brought in Otunba Deji Kosebinu who resumed as Principal of the school on 28th May, 2019 and statutorily retired on December 2nd , 2020 having recorded 35years of service.

The incumbent, Alhaji Ismail Olayinka Salako took over as principal of the school on 2nd December, 2020 to continue the good works of his predecessors.

It should be emphasized that Iganmode Grammar School, is a force to reckon with in the field of academics. Excelling  in various competitions at Local, Zonal, State, Regional, National and indeed international  levels. It is on record that the coveted Cowbell National Mathematics Competitions for Secondary Schools which it had won three times consecutively – 2011, 2012, and 2013, attest to this claim. (Iganmode Grammar School Ota is the only school with this record)

The school has also exhibited its supremacy at STAN Science Quiz Competitions (State & National), National Mathematics Olympiads, NNPC National Quiz Competitions and other externally organized by the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja.

Just recently, the school won the SG HOLDINGS, OGUN STATE QUIZ COMPETITION that worth One Million Naira (N1Million) and the NIFST National Debate Competition, coming 1st at both competitions.

Situated on a large expanse of land at Oju-Ore, Ota along Ota – Idiroko Express Road, the school is blessed with knowledgeable, capable and loyal Vice Principals as wellas dedicated, committed, ever resourceful and loyal teaching staff.

Of a fact, the school has produced numerous students who are ultimately doing fine in their different areas of callings.

The school is equally blessed with a vibrant Old Students Association, presently headed by Chief Jide Ojuko as its National President.

Cowbell National Secondary School Mathematics Competition

Igamode Grammar School has lived up to the dictates of its well crafted anthem by winning the coveted Cowbell National Secondary School Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC) for three consecutive seasons in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Though, a public school, students of Iganmode Grammar School, fondly called IGS by its alumnus have defended the coveted Promasidor NASSMAC mathematics prize back-to-back thereby gathering accolades for the school. For the very first time in the history of Cowbell National Mathematics competition in Nigeria Public Schools, students of Iganmode Grammar School (SNR) Ota won the overall best prize for three consecutive years, 2011, 2012 and 2013[3]
