DescriptionPoster for The Salon of the Mating Spiders at Test-Site Gallery, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, 1992.tif
English: This was a poster by Kevin Pyle for The Salon of the Mating Spiders which took place at Test-Site Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in June 19, 1992. Formulated by one of the gallery’s artists, Ebon Fisher, the salon was open to the entire community and set no restrictions on size or medium. This allowed a structure for the event to emerge out of the neighborhood. According to Flash Art, 600 artists included work for the salon and it became the gallery’s best-selling exhibition. No exhibition in New York has included that many artists before or since.
Fisher, who had been directing the immersive theater company, Nerve Circle, asked Kevin Pyle, the director of the non-profit gallery, Minor Injury, to design the poster. The two artists were both deeply involved in the Brooklyn Immersionist scene. Fisher created the logo for Test-Site which is humorously repeated in Pyle’s poster as an alien spaceship descending on the neighborhood. Two other Immersionists, Dina Emerson and Ken Butler were invited to perform outside the gallery on a scaffold during the opening.
