The Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (Indonesian: Fakultas Hukum Universitas Gadjah Mada, abbreviated as FH UGM) is the law school of Gadjah Mada University, a public university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Founded in February 1946, it is the first law school established after the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence.
History
[edit]The Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, was originally established as Faculteit Hoekoem Balai Perguruan Tinggi Gadjah Mada (FH BPTGM) on 17 February 1946 at SMA Negeri 3 Yogyakarta and was inaugurated on 3 March at the Central Indonesian National Committee Building.[1] The name Gadjah Mada was proposed by Boediarto, and the first lecture took place on 18 March at the Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat.[1]
On 7 December 1949, FH BPTGM merged with the law school in Surakarta and was renamed Sekolah Tinggi Hukum Jogjakarta (STHJ).[1] Following the issuance of Government Regulation No. 23 of 1949, STHJ became Faculteit Hukum Universiteit Negeri Gadjah Mada (FHUNGM) on 19 December 1949.[1] After the government issued Government Regulation No. 30 of 1950 on 14 August 1950, FHUNGM was renamed Fakultit Hukum, Sosial, dan Politik, Universitit Negeri Gadjah Mada (FHSP UNGM).[1] A branch school in Surabaya later became the Faculty of Law at Airlangga University.[1]
On 19 September 1952, FHSP UNGM was renamed Fakultit Hukum, Ekonomi, Sosial dan Politik Universitit Negeri Gadjah Mada (FHESP UNGM).[1] It was then renamed again as the Faculty of Law, Economy, and Political Science at Gadjah Mada University on 11 July 1955.[1]
On 15 September 1955, the government instructed the division of FHESP UNGM into three faculties: the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Economics, and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.[1] This marked the establishment of the independent Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (FH UGM).[1]
Reputation
[edit]The Faculty of Law Gadjah Mada University was ranked third among the best law schools in Indonesia, following the Faculty of Law, Airlangga University, and the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia.[2] It was also ranked in the top 200 law schools worldwide by the QS World University Rankings in 2024.[2]
Notable alumni
[edit]Notable alumni of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University include Hamengkubuwono X, Ganjar Pranowo, Albertina Ho, Mahfud MD, Patrialis Akbar, Hotman Paris, and Otto Hasibuan.[3][4]
