Also known as Huelga De Pesa, the Weight Strike was a labor strike of Cuban immigrant cigar workers in 1899 in Ybor City, now part of Tampa, Florida.
History

The Strike
[edit]The strike was sparked with the introduction of weight scales, meant to weigh an exact amount to be placed in each cigar. In addition to being seen as an insult to the cigar maker's honor, this prevented scraps from being taken home by workers.
