The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rwanda refers to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and its members in Rwanda.
History
[edit]The Church began holding regular worship services in Rwanda in the early 2000s when church members Nelson and Sapna Samuel migrated to Kigali from India. The first branch in Rwanda was organized in 2008; many of its members were native Rwandans who had joined the Church while living in other countries. In 2009, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland dedicated Rwanda for missionary work, and in 2010 a humanitarian missionary couple was sent there.[2] The first young proselyting missionaries were assigned to Rwanda in 2012. The Church gained official legal recognition from the Rwandan government in October 2013.[3]
District and Branches
[edit]As of February 2025, there were nine formal branches in Rwanda, all of which pertain to the Kigali Rwanda District:[4]
Kigali Rwanda District
- Gasanze Branch
- Gisozi Branch
- Kagugu Branch
- Kicukiro Branch
- Kimironko Branch
- Kiyovu Branch
- Nyamata Branch
- Nyamirambo Branch
In addition, the Rwanda Kigali Mission Branch covers areas within the mission boundaries that are not in reasonable proximity to a branch.[5]
Mission
[edit]In 2006, Rwanda was assigned to the Church's Uganda Kampala Mission. In July 2022, the Rwanda Kigali Mission was established.[6] It covers Rwanda, Burundi, and the Kivu region of DR Congo.[5]
Temples
[edit]As of February 2025, the Kigali Rwanda District is assigned to the Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple district.[7]
